Lupe is without a doubt the best new school rapper on a MAINSTREAM level. Him and Game.

Budden is nice too I like his Mood Muzic tapes and songs such as "In The Air", "Long Way To Go" and "Broken Wings".

Not everyone will like this group, and you have to be open minded to like them, but when it comes to alternative rap, I haven't heard much better than the Writerz Guild. If there's such a genre as hippy rap, these guys would fit the definition perfectly. They are pretty much unknown but they have some of the most diverse songs I've ever heard with trippy and psychedelic arraingment of beats(They play some of the instruments on their songs) and their songs are very soothing and they simulate the brain.

Check out some of these tracks:

-New Eyes - http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page...songID=2128203 (The lyrics are extremely abstract. )

-The Desert - http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page...songID=2408683 (This is another psychedelic song. Take a hit of acid or a smoke of some strong weed and I wouldn't doubt that you'd lose yourself and for a minute think you were in the desert)

                - The Ghost Inside-
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page...songID=2408683 (The last verse is amazing)

Atmosphere makes a lot of music that you are asking for. They are just average joes with extraordinary skill making life music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QjbfztRphk That's the song God's batroom floor, it's about drug use, but not on a gangster, dealing vibe.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbEwH...eature=related that's the song Trying to find a balance. It's in my top 5 favorite songs and video ever.

Illogic out of Columbus also makes music you are looking for. Here's a couple of his tracks:

                I've been here before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KerDOSzNmwI

                Hate in a puddle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICB-TbY96_8

Atmosphere is alright, but those first guys you mentioned are just...

I dunno, not good I guess, well not to me, they just sound weird, and not in a good way, I don't like to use the word, but it's a bit "nerd-hoppish" for my liking.

                  Just my opinion, though.

Anyways, Blue Scholars are kinda alternative.

Like I said, The Writerz Guild aren't for everyone, but I haven't heard any much rap that has as unique an arraingment of instrumentals.

You have to have an open mind to like the Writerz Guild.

They're good, specifically the mc Frank Wit. I'd put his lyrics up there with any other mc I've heard including dudes like Rakim, Nas..etc.

Listen to his verse on the song find yourself. It's the second verse. It's one of the best verses I've heard.

                    http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page...songID=3236513 -Find yourself.
