Valero suffered from very bad mental illness to the point that he had to get exceptions from the board for massive amounts of psychiatric medication but he was still allowed to box (until he murdered his wife and allegedly hanged himself in prison).

He's bi-polar and consistently said boxing is his saviour. He spent time out of the gym after retiring and spiralled into depression until he got back in there. He's probably in the manic phase and believes he can still contend at 54 not only that but he needs to, for his own mental health.

Recipe for a disaster potentially, he will inevitably be refused a license and hopefully that doesn't trigger a big depressive episode.

He's been a spokesman for mental health so hopefully this is just him making a point that mental health doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Article said BBBoC won't give him a license so any boxing organisation that does will be exposing themselves to a lot of criticism and negative press.
