King was a supremely talented guy. Behind the hair and the goofy persona was a calculating and brilliant but cold-hearted motherfucker. Although it was despicable, the way he played the networks, the casinos, and the various boxing bodies off against each other showed was kind of genius. He must be one of the greatest salesmen that ever lived.

I'm not saying he wasn't talented at promotion or a very intelligent guy fwiw.

Probably most cats who take advantage of people monetarily are talented (in some way legal or otherwise) & smart (or at least smarter than their victims) just that at their core they are of sh^tty character.

Well most people that do it can do it because they've engineered some sort of power over the other party. Expertise, confidence, or negotiation position. Eventually King had all three. He knew how the business worked, he could sell anything, and he controlled access to the title shots.

I've listened to interviews with guys like Chris Byrd where the interviewer has asked him how he could have signed with King knowing everything he had done to his fighters. And he just said it's a whole different thing when you're in a room with him. Everything he says makes sense.

King is a combination of naturally gifted salesmanship and a sociopathic disregard for other people. He's a criminal to his fingertips and boxing is the place he found to exploit his skills.
