Default The value of Consensus can it save us?

Humor Me, lord knows I try to humor you guys when possible...Yeah I fail misrably but I try.

Heres the deal: I don't think any group, any particular individual here, or on any other internet group is stupid, evil, bad, etc beyond any normal average that exists for encountering such individuals. Even the worse trolls here, if I ever encountered them, I would be civil. I would assume they probably have their reasons but are not necessarily bad people.

What causes most fire is when people insult each other and when we disagree. Political disagreements are perhaps the worse... And I get that. One theory of social engagement is that of consensus. This theory has a lot of supposed originations. One of them is the following: legend has it that in the year 1968, or so, when there were all these scatterbrained theories about how to best educate children, a man had a class in East Harlem or so, of 4th graders.

This teacher decided that to teach the kids about politics and history he would invent a game that took the real problems in the world, and posed the challenges to his class. Meanwhile class participants would assume the role of functionaries, leaders, and others that were in the process of making the decisions.

Well word got out that some of these "decisions" that the class had made were quite effective, creative and innovative. Soon enough rumor has it that government officials asked to "sit in" on the class. So... was this just kids dumb luck? Sure the kids came up with great material, but was there an underlying reason?

Well... what kids could do was to see past differences and develop the process of "consensus." In other words, when all the information was in, with a desire to solve the problem, all sides could yield certain perspectives in the name of a consensus.

Now before anyone makes a snide remark...When was the last time ANYONE here, regarding a political thread, backed off a belief, for the sake of seeing a common point of view? And NO! saying KIllery Klinton is a Satanist, is not a fact... Yes it may be true, but I have to question, as one who believes that, whether it is necessary when, for example, we as a group are evaluating our media.

Folks consensus is the antidote to the age old strategy of divide and conquer... Know this, and know that the best way to beat an ambush is to move straight through as fast as possible, and your doing pretty good.

We are all being poisoned at the same well: Maybe your water is poisoned with cherry Kool Aid and tastes better than mine... But so what? Does anyone on either side of the aisle think, for a moment, that the media is operating in an ethical manner? And can you put aside your personal feelings for the people involved and look at the real core issue?

So this thread is a place where you can see it from the other guys perspective: Here is where I will start to try to set an example...

Is Donald Trump corrupt?

When Donald decided to build in Manhattan he had to be corrupt because all the real estate materials and interests are somewhat controlled by different criminal factions. Trump was known not to pay people who did work for him, because they had no real recourse.

I see Trump as a person who, while not a paragon of virtue, is an outsider. Washington is full of a caste of individuals who all come from the same set of families, get incredible benefits, and do not to much of anything for the people. This is the Washington elite. I find this despicable. Bernie Sanders, for example, never held a real job in his life!

To me because he is an outsider Trump is vilified. His corruption is no better, or worse than the Washington elite, but he opposes them and that is good enough for me. He has actually tried to take on China, which will destroy the world if allowed to keep growing, and he has improved the economy. Washington is in bed with the globalists and will not defy China, IMO. If you banked with me and I changed the rates continually to hide, and to embellish my standing you would switch banks right? that is what China does.

These are my reasons for supporting Trump. That and my hate for Hillary Clinton. I will put that hate aside in the name of consensus building. When not personally invested I see Clinton as someone who has cut deals for the better of her clan, for other insiders part of her Democratic allies, and I see evidence of criminal behavior in her past. i say this as someone who has researched what happened in Arkansas, from the ground up and will share this with anyone who wishes to know.

Finally before turning this over: Some of us hold the view that Trump is connected to the rest of the elites, and they are pretending to be different sides of the same coin. I hold that this view is reasonable. I also know from research of differences that appear to me, at this point, to be important. But I do think this view may well turn out to be my own as well. They are all corrupt and that can be factually proven, even if not the way people think it can be proven lol... It has nothing to do with Ukraine or Russian muck racking.

Can you put aside personal differences in the name of consensus? Can we discuss such a proposal for the betterment of our country? Can we hold the media to the task of not being controlled by any interest but the truth?

Yes.

In the members lounge there is a conspiracy "catch all" thread, just for that purpose. It has a lot of different info, and is a work in progress. It is designed to critically evaluate and to let others contribute as well. I will edit this post with a link

Your a smart guy but you sometimes get "pulled" into things that, could be thought through. Democracy is a type of consensus and it is the authority of the masses, those more bereft of the fruits of logic, of rare qualities, etc... But this is not the only kind of consensus and it is in fact, an impersonal type of leadership.

First off, you cannot have a true participatory democracy we would have to have buttons on our phone to vote on every thing...EVERYTHING.

Second, Utilitarian values that are the backbone of the democratic process are a giant quid pro quo to the masses... But what are we going to do? tell one woman who has ten kids who have an IQ of 70 and another woman who has raised two children, high IQ, spirited, etc... that the kids are not equal? lol. Go ahead, I will stand behind you...way back, maybe around the corner.... errr does she have to see me?

Consensus is how we dialogue and resolve issues as well as how we purport to absolutely control things.

The irony of Trump is that many of the people who hate him, are actually anti-establishment--i.e., anti-swamp! Along comes an outsider who is not establishment or career politician, he is independently wealthy hence he cannot be bought off, and he was loved by the masses right up until he questioned Obama's birth certificate. These same droids who blindly followed Obama and Clinton despite their corruption, lies and race-hustling, hate Trump because he is white, wealthy, and Republican. They are party loyalists, anarchists, and socialists.

Speaking of socialists, there is a movement in this country to "buy the consensus" in the form of socialism and government giveaways. Socialism appeals to people with zero ambition, minimalists, and those with a sense of entitlement. Candidates such as Bernie, Warren, and Harris want to buy their votes with social services and robbing the rich (middle class) to pay the poor. The new consensus has a price tag, and the working class will foot the bill.

Direct democracy is a consensus.

Representative democracy not necessarily.

The problem with consensus rule is the minority has even less of a voice imo.

Also the consensus choice, the consensus opinion, the consensus route...... half the time is wrong.

Tbh we can't even do talent contests right. Look at who wins in those americas got talent shows.

Representative democracy is democracy, there is no other way it can function... Again, we would have to vote on every last thing.

I disagree with you about the consensus opinion...it is totally related to context. Take that show where you get asked questions en route to a million dollar question...One of the most effective life lines for a contestant was to ask the audience consensus for an answer (they were allowed one of these a round, or something) and it was very effective.

Consensus dynamics are not only democratic institutions. I agree with you but what you call consensus I call democracy. Could you not have a consensus of the best scientists in the world?

When we use democratic ideas to create a majority I would in fact call this the tyranny of the majority and hardly a consensus. But this tyranny goes both ways really... When airplanes served meals for example, what about the individual who says "I need a special meal with no pork, no nut products for an allergy." The airlines would eventually serve things to the majority to make sure they provided for these individuals instead of telling them "bring your own meal" a more logical solution.

My point is that your critscism of consensus as a value is really arbitrary... it could as easily be the tyranny of the minority, with 'less of a voice' and all. I am talking about problem solving and hearing the experiences of others, not exerscizing power over others.
