Alvarez isn't a chump, and Golovkin, as an opponent, likely doesn't move the needle all that much more than a Gabriel Rosado would move the needle.

If Golovkin steps onto the scale at 157.5, Alvarez will give him the customary 2 hours to sweat off the weight, and if he doesn't, Alvarez walks from the fight (leaving Golden Boy to fill in the spot with someone else on the show).
General Scipio, Hannibal drops the Elephants and doubles down on the Calvary...

Golden Boy can't justify the PPV without Canelo vs GGG... Too much goe$ into this promotion.... It would be a complete debacle if Canelo walks.... Particularly if GGG makes a strong case about trying his hardest to make the weight only to come up short...

As despicable as the premise might seem, it's behind the scenes.... The show must go on.... I just don't think Canelo can walk due to a couple of pounds.... It's not about blame, (GGG would clearly be at fault) it's about Entertainment & results.... The result of Canelo walking is no entertainment for the paying fans....

The fight is a product for sale... The fans (Who pay for everything ultimately.) are buying this product... You can't pre sell the product and not deliver, that's disastrous.... The reasons (Beyond injury) are inconsequential to the customer.... You can't sell Canelo vs GGG then tell the fans to enjoy the undercard....
Like going to a restaurant and ordering and paying for Surf & Turf and getting only the appetizer and soup or salid... Then the waiter says Sorry, the chefs couldn't agree on how to prepare your dinner....

GGG wouldn't do that. He won't accept a weight limit of less than 160 in the first place and rightfully so. The fact that he said he would fight Mayweather at 154 has nothing to do with this situation. Mayweather wouldn't be defending the world middleweight title. Canelo is though and therefore is required to defend his title at the proper 160 pound limit or forfeit the title. He got away with not fighting Khan at the 160 pound limit because the smaller Khan also wanted 155 and didn't complain. GGG will not put up with it.

Couldn't Golden Boy just refund the PPV money to fans and make it a free fight and use the penalty money from GGG to recoup some of their losses?

Nope... If Canelo walks, there will be no purse because there will be no fight... GGG only pays a penalty if the fight goes on... That penalty money would go directly to team Canelo if the fight takes place....

The PPV would be cancelled if Canelo walks.... But the PPV infrastructure set up to handle the fight would be a total loss for GBP and HBO.... The promotional costs for advertisement, among other considerations, would be almost a complete loss as well...
They could show the undercard on HBO for subscribers..

The reality is, Canelo would fight and GGG becomes tainted if this scenario plays out..... I don't think GGG would pull a Salido.... I was interested to see if Canelo's fans believe he would fight regardless.... Kind of a mixed bag so far.....

Personally I feel Canelo would man up and take the fight..... But I feel some Canelo fans don't understand that the post was designed to solicit their faith in Canelo.... To pound their chests and say "War Canelo" !!! Not designed to question his heart, because I do think 100% that he fight anyway.....

FLoyd fans will be very angry, because he has to be weight-drained.

either scenario, even if the fight plays out at a 160 Golovkín is going to gas out!!

Canelo's defense is far superior than anything GGG has tried to catch. I foresee GGG running into uppercuts and the crowd be roaring

Golovkin did 100k-150k PPV buys for his fight; to act as if Golovkin would be bringing any real audience with him for the fight is laughable. Golovkin-Wade has been on sale for weeks now, at a building that "Golovkin sold out", and the building still has like 40% of the seats available.

If Golovkin misses the weight, Alvarez-Rosado isn't as far a step down as folks think from Alvarez-Golovkin; recall that Cotto-Alvarez was deemed so big a fight that the MGM simply bought up all of the tickets for themselves.

Alvarez is the clear A-side fighter for the fight, and Golovkin dicking out on the weight, for whatever reason his team tries to come up with, is an example of blatant disrespect for Alvarez. Canelo will give him the extra time to sit in the sauna and boil off the last of that weight, and if Golovkin can't get to Canelo's weight, I don't see Alvarez's pride allowing Golovkin to still step into the ring with him.

Alvarez still fights, delivering the Texas fans what they likely wanted to see ayway; he just won't be fighting Golovkin.
