Good choice, I'd add him and Jack White to my initial suggestions.

Are only rock players allowed, or do no other forms of music exist?

Page and Slash are lackeys compared to one of their mentors
                Michael Bloomfield. ask johnny winters.
not enough credit goes to the paul butterfield blues band
                in the history of rock.

I'll check them out, I'd also like to suggest you don't necessarily need to be a great guitarist to be a great entertainer, I would like special mention for Jesse Hughes of Eagle of Death Metal fame, are ay of you familiar with them ?

I used to claim Jimi Hendrix; but then I realized.....Hendrix was no mere guitar player. He was a force of nature. There is Hendrix...and then there is daylight.

So, bringing it down to "guitar players", my vote is for Vaughn; but I am admittedly partial to the Blues.

jazz guitarists are way more skilled than rock guitarists, i'd say larry carlton and wes montgomery were way better than most rock legends, except hendrix and stevie ray vaughn. also les paul, who has a guitar named after him was really great in his time
