And that's where Trump messed up. The FBI didn't have anything near the leeway Mueller has to do his investigation. If Trump wouldn't have fired Comey there would've never been a special counsel. But he listened to Kushner instead of Bannon. Manfort, Flynn, Papadopoulos, Gates, and the rest would have never been charged. Remember Comey said he didn't think Flynn had lied to the FBI. Once Mueller began the investigation it was found out that Flynn actually did lie. Contrary to what Trump wants you to think, the FBI isn't all powerful and they are constrained and don't have near as much leeway to investigate as Mueller. Not only did firing Comey spark the special counsel collusion investigation, it also sparked a new investigation, obstruction of justice.
