if i had to pick a word i'd say that i was curious.

When I was a teenager I was into that stuff too, I think it's a phase a lot of teenagers/young adults go through, like a morbid curiosity. In my day it was Faces of Death and Traces of death, which used to be in the X rated section in the video stores. Of course a lot them were fake but some of it most certainly was real (probably about 50/50 and the real stuff was usually post death or accidents/suicides caught on film). And later they had all kinds of websites dedicated to that kind of nasty stuff , they still do but lots of content has to be removed, but back then the internet was thinking wild west and you could find anything.

I can't stomach any of that kind of crap now, I refuse to watch.

Snuff tapes have existed probably as long as video has but not in the definition of the thread starter - people purposely murdering for the sake of selling the videos for profit, thats not the reality. What they are are always either accidental death, executions, especially beheadings these days, or murder caught on film that gets past around and sometimes sold. I don't think there has been a single case of an actual snuff tape being proven as real (under that definition). here is a snopes article that talks about it in depth:

It really just boils down on the definition of snuff tapes:

1. Murders, executions, suicide, accidents, etc caught on film or recorded for the murderers own personal sick pleasure = of course they exist. Thousands and thousands of them exist.

2. A murder being committed for the sole purpose of video taping it and profiting from the video = false. This doesn't happen and according to Snopes, there hasn't been a single case of this happening ever (there have been plenty of fakes however).

but snuff videos, like stuff you see on liveleak or gore websites are real.

15 years ago, a German man named Armin Meiwes killed another man in a sexual-sadistic ritual and videotaped it all. The sickest twist here is that the victim was fully consenting. Meiwes firstly amputated his penis, they tried eating it together, etc. When the victim died several hours later Meiwes slaughtered him, cut him up in pieces and put meat in his freezer for later consumption. Colorful stuff. Some court officials have seen the tapes which are not floating around out there somewhere, so no need to waste time looking for them.

I remember when that happened and it brought up an interesting debate regarding his punishment, since the guy was a willing subject. iirc the guy posted a Craigslist add (or whatever the German equivalent was) and everything was neatly arranged and agreed upon. Very twisted individuals! It seemed like for a while Germany was absolutely crazy with a lot of bizarre and twisted killings, but those types of headlines have died down a bit over the past few years (or perhaps it's just not getting the same press as it did 15-20 years ago).

lots of kids and homeless people go missing every day and no one notices, I'd bet a few of them are killed while a cheap video camera or webcam is on. a few serial killers have videotaped their crimes also, I think paul bernardo had video of some of his victims. definitely snuff video is real
