  • Pacquiao 5th among world’s top grossers

Manny Pacquiao is ranked fifth among the 20 highest-paid international athletes, according to a list compiled by Sports Illustrated.

Among American athletes, golfer Tiger Woods is on top with $90,508,163.

Based on SI’s research, Pacquiao has amassed $38 million (P1.7 billion) from his ring earnings and endorsements the last 12 months. The bulk of Pacquiao’s earnings comes from his fights with Miguel Cotto in November 2009 and Joshua Clottey last March.

Last year, Pacquiao was rated third, counting his blockbuster win over Oscar De La Hoya, during which he earned $40 million (P1.87 billion).

His earnings from boxing do not include his other income from endorsements of Philippine products of which he is the topnotcher among Filipino endorsers.

Topping the list in the international category compiled by SI is Swiss tennis player Roger Federer, who has collected $67,768,110, while a far second is Argentine footballer Lionel Messi with $44 million and third is fellow soccer star, British David Beckham with $40,500,000.

At fourth is another soccer icon, Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo with $40 million and fifth is the Filipino fighter.

Rounding out the top 10 places are Japanese baseball player Ichiro Suzuki ($37 million), Italian motorcycle racer Valentino Rossi ($35 million), Chinese cager Yao Ming ($34,378,325), Spanish tennis idol Rafael Nadal ($27,466,515) and British F1 ace Lewis Hamilton ($26,700,000).

Among American athletes, meanwhile, golfer Tiger Woods is on top with $90,508,163, followed by another familiar fairway face, Phil Mickelson with $61,660,757. Third is boxer Floyd Mayweather with $60,250,000.

NBA star Lebron James is fourth with $45,779,912 and baseball hotshot Alex Rodriguez of New York Yankees is fifth with $37 million.

Pacquiao is booked to make a return to the ring on Nov. 13 possibly against Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto or Mexican Antonio Margarito after efforts to pair him with Mayweather fell by the wayside.

Soccer players are the highest paid athletes. Average boxers don't get a lot of money. Only superstars like Pac, DLH and Floyd get millions. I don't even know if a guy like Cintron ever made 500 000 $ in one night.
