  • Ray Mercer fight in on THIS FRIDAY!!!

    Even talks about James Toney

By James Slater - Ray Mercer, the former WBO heavyweight champion, made a big splash when he fought MMA star Tim Sylvia back in June of last year, flattening Sylvia inside ten-seconds with a huge right hand to the chin. Before that win, “Merciless” had lost to Kimbo Slice in an exhibition bout, and now, this coming Friday night in Connecticut, the 49-year-old will enter the cage again. This time set to face Ron Sparks, in a fight that was set to happen a few months back, Mercer will be looking to pick up his first win, of any kind - boxing or MMA - since parking Sylvia..

Sparks, known as “The Monster,” is unbeaten in MMA, with an impressive-looking 5-0(4) record. Not even close to being an expert on MMA, I can’t comment on the quality (or lack of quality) of the big, 6’5” 285-pounder’s opposition, but Mercer is confident of getting himself a win.

I called the always-friendly former Olympic gold medallist earlier today, and the 36-7-1(26) warrior told me about the fight taking place at Foxwoods Resort and Casino.

“I’m ready to go,” Ray told me. “I’m fighting Ron Sparks this Friday in Connecticut and I’m definitely gonna get the win. This fight was supposed to happen a few months back, but it got cancelled. I’m leaving tomorrow, and I can’t wait for this fight.”

Mercer also gave me his thoughts on the efforts of his friend James Toney, who suffered a loss in his own, well-publicised MMA debut against Randy “The Natural” Couture.

“Oh, James Toney, he’s one of the best boxers from America in the last twenty years, but it looked like he didn’t even train for that fight [with Couture],” Ray said, somewhat regretfully. “These MMA guys, you have to give them full respect, going into their sport and all. James Toney didn’t do that. It was kind of sad to see.”

I brought up Mercer’s quick win over Sylvia; why couldn’t Toney do something similar?

“He could have, but he just didn’t try,” Mercer insisted. “He never really did anything. I warned him about the takedowns these guys are so good at. You have to give these guys full respect - all sides of their game.”

Mercer has his game face on for the Sparks fight and he is sure to at the very least give a far better account of himself than the one “Lights Out” gave Vs. “The Natural.” Can Mercer score another quick KO? Or will Sparks - a fighter who had his MMA debut in 2006, went on to win three bouts in the 1st-round, then had an inactive spell of two-and-half-years before returning with A quick KO and then a points win last spring - prove to be too big and too strong for the former boxing champ?

    OK nuthuggers.

So really, how significant was Mercer's win over Silvia???

    Answer: it wasn't worth ****!

Look at mercer now, taking a fight against a 5-0 guy!

Landing a flush shot on a Couture who knows he is facing a boxer is a lot harder than landing a flush shot on Tim Sylvia.

Despite the size difference, Couture did a good job of outboxing TS.

I think Mercer beating Sylvia will be his only moment of success in the sport. We've already seen him look very poor against MMA fighters and kickboxers, and he's also fat and shot.

Let me just take this time to say, Ray Mercer is the fucking man (talking boxing now).

He's been described as one of the best jabbers ever to grace the sweet science, and he's also a man who gave one Lennox Lewis all that he could handle, and nearly won that fight. A prime Ray Mercer would probably unify the damn titles in the heavyweight division today. I mean know disrespect to the Klitschko's, and they are a formidable pair to say the least, but they are overrated on account of the weak division which they fight in. Prime Ray would knock Wlad. the fuck out, and would probably figure out a way to beat a prime Vitaly as well.

          In closing,

the only thing with the silvia fight is mercer cried around w/ silvia that he stand and trade (SUICICE) ...... and when he threw one kick he was about to quit like he did before when a kick boxer kicked him in the head LOL

that win is a lil overrated. If Sylvia actually wanted to fight mma i think it woulda been a different story.

Becuz in all the pre fight interviews ect he kept going crazy that he didnt want him to take it to the ground and wanted to trade toe to toe

You display your gross ignorance here, just as you do everytime you post.

The beef was that the fight was actually suppose to be a boxing match.

They couldn't get it sanctioned, so they switched it to MMA at the last minute.

Ray Mercer was adamant that they bate and switched him, and he still knocked Tim the fuck out.

Keep posting, but don't start acting as if you know your ass from your hand, as you clearly don't.

Go eat a pile of shit, and stop fucking acting like you know a damn thing. Your ignorant as fuck, and it's obvious. You don't even know English, for fucks sake. That isn't meant as any sort of disrespect to non-native English speakers who frequent this board, but you are a fucking clown. On top of that, you can't even speak your native language.

I don't wish to treat you as such a bitch, but quit acting like a bitch, and maybe I'll reconsider. Until then, you can jam sand up your fucking nose.
