Leonard VS Pryor - Leonard did not duck Aaron

I don't think Pryor would have had a chance to beat Leonard. Who did Pryor ever beat that was as good as Leonard? Pryor was a good puncher with a high work rate but he was also sloppy, wild, and easy to hit. He never beat a welterweight in his life. He would have been wide open for the powerful straight right hand punches of Duran, Hearns and Leonard and lost to all of them, probably by KO. I can't believe Leonard would fight guys like Duran, Hearns and Hagler but be afraid to fight Pryor. That's just my opinion and of course can't be proven. I saw all of these fighters fight many times. Pryor never had a problem making 140 so Leonard also had a good size advantage.

Good post, it's become a myth that Leonard ducked Pryor due to the HBO segment Legendary Fights. Also, Leonard would have massacred Pryor, just two different classes of fighters.

Between 1980-1981: Pryor was offered $750,000 to fight Roberto Duran but turned it down because his new attorney told him not to sign anything until he worked out a new contract with LaRosa. By the time they worked out a new agreement, the chance to fight Duran was gone.
1982: Pryor signed to face Sugar Ray Leonard for the undisputed welterweight championship in the fall of 1982. His purse was going to be $750,000. Pryor had previously been offered $500,000 to fight Leonard, but he turned it down. Before fighting Pryor, Leonard first had to defend his title against Roger Stafford in Buffalo, New York on May 14, 1982. Pryor was on his way to Buffalo to taunt Leonard (business is business even between close friends)and help hype the fight when he heard on his car radio that Leonard had suffered a detached retina. "I pulled off to the side of the road and I cried," Pryor said. Leonard retired six months later.Last edited by richardt; 08-12-2014, 08:11 PM.
