Ferdinand is quality. Anyone who's out of the game for 8 months and still performs at a high level is a quality player. Vidic doesn't make Ferdinand a better defender, even before Vidic arrived Ferdinand was a solid defender. And Vidic isn't exactly playing like a world beater himself these days. Ferdinand > Vidic.

It's a shame that Ledley King is never fit because Ferdinand and Terry would have to duke it out to partner King for England.

Terry reads the game really well. It's that plus his toughness that makes him such a good defender rather than his skill. I would probably rate Ferdinand a more skilfull footballer than Terry, and he has better pace. He just doesn't have any grasp of the game which is not a good thing for a central defender, and which explains why he so often makes absolute gaffes that need cleaning up by his betters.
