  • Weaknesses in prime Tyson.

Tyson in his prime was one of the best heavyweights to ever step in the ring, but every fighter has a weakness.

I think one weakness he had was that he didn't have much of an inside game. Also, fighters with a good jab gave him trouble.

Conditioning in the later rounds. He noticeably slowed down around rounds 9/10 onwards due to an existing illness but by that time, his opponent was beaten up so bad/fought extremely negatively that Tyson could coast

He had no heart and a serious lack of character, because of his dominance in the 80’s we couldn’t see it exposed.

He had very weak greco roman. Meaning he got pushed back when in a clinch easily by almost any opponent. Which was surprising because he obviously has a solid core with a strong base.

I always thought his biggest weakness was in the clinch and his seeming inability to throw punches on the inside thus just accepting it. There were times in his fights where you could actually hear Rooney screaming at Tyson to punch.

From his inability to fight on the inside came his susceptibility to uppercuts while clinched. He had other weaknesses but, in my opinion, that was the biggest and most glaring.

Every other Tyson weakness paled in significance next to badly traumatised psychology.

Mentally he was damaged goods. The fact that this crippling handicap was kept under wraps for such a long time really is testament first to D'Amato and later the power of fame, money and the Non-Disclosure Agreement...

Well, once he left Rooney and the strict discipline he provided, that was carried over from Cus, it became a glaring weakness. That was Tyson's greatest blunder in my opinion. Leaving Rooney, Jacobs and Cayton was the true beginning of the end. Don King is/was straight poison.

Conditioning in the second half for sure and his defense had hole for those with enough balls to find them.

Without getting into character flaws, his technical weakness was his helplessness in clinches. As long as both arms were free he did well in close. No one was going to let both his arms remain free when they saw his inability to extricate himself from entanglements. He became almost passive in this common boxing posture, content to languish there until the ref intervened.

true that. he was also easily walked around the ring once hes in a clinch. he would often look to the ref for assistance.

his movements were also easily timed if the opponent had the courage to time him....
bob left, bob right, throw hook, repeat.
