I remember Joe being treated similarly back in the day by fat Yanks. Wilder is clearly a top level, talented fighter who is ready and willing to prove himself against the hype machine. He isn't a massive draw though and not a lot of people know who he is. He holds a title but he's also a member of the "Who needs him?" club when it comes to the top level. Too much risk and not enough reward. He is avoided, and then slandered and has his character assassinated in the media. Morons out there believe he is "ducking" and "scared" when he's actually crying out for the big fights.

No announcement yet.
Deontay Wilder is the Joe Calzaghe of the Heavyweights.

Could just as easily be the Jeff LAcy of the HWs as well at this point.
Big power, lots of hype, little in terms of pure skill.

to be fair, joe calzaghe didnt attempt to win a recognised title until he was 34, and strung together awful defences before that aside from robin reid.
Deontay did it at 30. Hes ahead of joe as things stand. That said, pretty much is ahead of Joe calzaghes first recognised title capture - ward, froch, chunky, even george groves won his earlier than joe etc.
though by 35, it might be a different story, Joe had briefly unified at that age, and by then had some decent defences against Mikkel Kessler, Lacy, Bika. Lets see if Wilder can deliver the heavyweight equivalent of that.
Again its a pretty low standard to be shooting for, maybe he can do better. by the time he retires.Last edited by DreamFighter; 03-29-2018, 07:28 AM.
