New North Carolina Bill Allows Duke Energy To Dodge Coal Ash Cleanup Again

While residents and environmentalists urge Duke Energy to clean up its coal ash pits, North Carolina’s biggest utility — and the governor’s former workplace — just got another pass from the legislature....

In 2014, despite Duke’s assurances that the storage ponds were safe, a dam ruptured and sent thousands of tons of toxic sludge into the Dan River, forcing regulators to deal with the threat of future contamination — and the results of water testing that show nearby communities already have tainted wells.

Under legislation passed shortly after the Dan River spill, the company would have been required to clean up all its storage sites. But new, less demanding legislation passed the House on Thursday evening and is expected to be signed by Gov. Pat McCrory (R), who worked at Duke for 28 years before entering politics.

I don't want this to be a partisan thread as politicians from both sides are greedily accepting money from corporations to do their bidding.

But what do you propose we do with companies who pollute our waterways like Duke Energy? If there are no regulations to punish or stop them then do you think they will magically become good stewards of the environment on their own?

Punish them with HEAVY fines until they are forced to change the way they operate.

regulations are fine, if done in an efficient manner.. Its the over-regulating, and corrupt governance that ruins everything

Take for example my state of illinois, liberal policies have driven the state into financial ruin, people are leaving the state by the millions, a bunch of factories have been closed,, probably never to reopen.. Their was a proposal to tear them down and return the grounds to farmland, yet the epa regulations make it impossible because it will take 20 years or longer to complete this project due to the epa regulations, which basically kills the project and we will know have a massive, unproductive, empty concrete pad and nothing more... Government suffocates the economy, hence why the bigger it grows, the worse the economy and quality of life is lowered
