Because being a PPV star has nothing to do with how good you fight, yet everything to do with how good you fight.

Floyd became a PPV star because he could fight great, but he also fought who he needed to fight, and then took the leap with WWE and Dancing with the Stars.

Mix all that together and you get Floyd being a million buys fighter.

Pacquiao got there by fighting great through 130lbs (and beyond careful matchmaking from 135lbs up), but also with an aggressive media machine that trumped him up as the one guy who could beat Mayweather (the PPV star).

Canelo took the fights he needed to take, and took the big shots that he needed, and emerged as a PPV star (and would be a bigger star if he was conversational in English, but whatever).

There are a bunch of guys right now building through that first part; Wilder, Spence, Mikey, Bud when he was at 140lbs, Jermall, etc.

Now you've got to get the chances for the second part; Wilder's monologue on the Late Late Show, SpenceJr and Mikey getting the hard push during the Cowboys games, Charlo almost getting the Golovkin fight, etc.

Get a spot on Masked Singer, guest host on ESPN, but most importantly make the fights that will keep the boxing audience in a frenzy (and intrigue the rest of the sports world in being curious enough to look).

Canelo and Joshua are being built to be big stars over the next 5-10 years.

Canelo is only PPV because of the Mexicans in USA, outside of that, he would be average.

Most people I know dont order his fights unless they are mexican decent or latino, but with Pac and Floyd they had people from all races in America buying their fights, same with Oscar

why is it hard for these younger boxers to become stars on ppv you would think it would be easier with the social media and internet

Is it because they just dont have that It factor to them nothing unique to their style or personality?

Pacquiao was a berserker non stop come forward wild man with no fear, Floyd was a brash talking villian, Oscar the pretty golden boy.

None of these younger guys really stand out.
Because both manny and Floyd have a PPV god in Oscar de la Hoya to pass the torch. Floyd never gave a young guy the opportunity like he was given by Oscar. Manny has yet to do so but maybe he can pass his torch to either Thurman or Spence

They became crossver because of each other. They both kept winning (sometimes in dominant fashion) and took turns avoiding each other.

Floyd worked hard to become #1 athlete in the world (athlete, not boxer). He did WWE, Dancing with the Stars, went to jail, the 24/7 series, the Twitter and YouTube videos dissing Manny and Roach and Arum, the Larry Merchant interview...all of these things RAISE public/social profiles

Floyd was huge and already a household name, but he needed a villain and it was going to be Margarito if Margs got through Mosley. He was finished after Mosley though. Manny rose to the occasion and we got a great story for 5 years...the buildup was better than the actual fight XD XD

That definitely doesn't help Canelo

Oscar was a "pretty boy" who was a badass in the ring. People get hung up on his out of ring stuff after he retired, but he could fight.

Floyd did a lot to build his brand. More than any other boxer, ever.

Errol Spencer and the entire Al Haymon crew have no promoter. Nobody talks about them. The boxing world is slowly pulling back the curtain. All Haymon fighters are the same. They either fight over-the-hill leftovers (Josesito Lopez, Ghost Guerrero, Andre Berto, Chris Algieri, etc.) or they fight each other. In either sense they are put in a situation where it's a win-win for Haymon.

Look at any Pound-for-Pound list. There are virtually Z E R O Haymon fighters in any credible POUND for POUND list. The only fighter is Mikey Garcia and Mikey defected from Top Rank. Errol Spencer is not Pound for Pound for beating up heavy bag Lamont Peterson 10 years after his prime ended lol

Definitely

Pacquiao was only ever popular because he was linked to Floyd and there was an entire storyline built around Floyd "ducking" or "being scared" of Manny. Floyd was the household name (for the aforementioned reasons) and Manny successfully linked his name to Floyds...they became yin & yang.

They lack ersonalitiies and don't understand what "crossover" superstar means. Doing the WWE, doing the Dancing with the Stars, 24/7, making headlines, etc.

Terrence Crawford + Errol Spencer are drawing no interest in their fight because neither have any appeal

Anthony Joshua + Deontay Wilder are drawing zero interest unless you're already familiar with one or both

Gervonta + Loma draw no interest because they're little fellas and they don't make any headlines

You've got to be very good at what you do (i.e., Floyd), have a personality that matches, become an "entertainer" and not just a boxer, and win fights. Period.

******s like this are what's wrong with boxing and the world in general.

Floyd fought Ghost Guerrero and Victor Ortiz - both much younger and given the chance to build their own legacy

And, you're either too dumb or ******ed, Ca$h-fucking-nelo. Canelo lost against Floyd in what remains a Top 5 PPV ever. It was a great event and had a phenomenal undercard...2012 or 2013.

That was the definition of a torch-passing fight. Canelo wasn't ready.

And there were no available good fighters during Floyd's ascension. Thurman, Porter, and Garcia remain NOBODIES. None of them wanted the fight and all of them would've lost the fight.

It's a shame Terrence Crawford doesn't have a personality. He would've made a good scrap against an aging Floyd

pac single handidly bring the sport back to the top by his crowd pleasing style. He beat all his opponent in a very dominant fashion that's why he became a crossover star.

Lesser PPV stars have to do with lesser amount of fighters fighting the best of the best. Casuals didn't connect on them because of this.

Canelo is the closest thing just because he is at least trying to fight the best of the best. He just needs to dominate more. Put GGG behind, then dominate some more.

Another thing is the Torch is still not passed--this is the traditional way of earning PPV star status. Hardcore and Casual fans have two different views about this. For hard cores, passing of the torch is dismissed as just beating an old worn out fighter. Casuals are more forgiving, they don't see it that way. Most often than not, they would end up rallying with you if you beat their guy convincingly.
