Golovkin started his olympic career at light welterweight and Ward started at middleweight. So they were about 2 weight classes apart. In the 2004 Olympics Golovkin was at middleweight and Ward was at light heavy weight. Since then Ward has made the move from 168 to 175(bravo for not cutting weight) and Golovkin has remained at his comfortable weight at 160.

Golovkin's frame would not comfortably make 168 as he looks fully fleshed at 160 and any success at 168 would be a testament to his immense skills. Ward has expressed interest in fighting at heavyweight. All that said GGG offered to fight Ward in 2013 and Ward said no.

Golovkin would have Ward's name in his resume even with the huge size disparity and Ward said no.

Andre Ward still has no opponent lined up when he should if he is to honor the contract of fighting Kovalev in 2016. Wake me up when Ward is serious about a challenge because the last 3 years it's all been bums.

Ward has been fighting at lhw for years now and this is his first genuine world class opponent in almost 4 years. I don't understand what the big deal is? He has literally had years of tune ups.

      Boxing fans these days smh.

Golovkin fans like seeing him pound on guys. This is why they get up in arms if you mention Lara, Ward, Andrade, and certain other names. That's fine and all, if you don't want to see your guy in challenges, but it would be nice if they stopped acting like boxing begins and ends with him. Golovkin himself is pretty plain and inoffensive. It's primarily the fans that are annoyances.

The funniest thing is that this whole "Ward-GGG" feud didn't start until Stevenson didn't fight Kovalev and everyone called him Chickenson. After this happened, a certain group of posters demanded that GGG move to fight Ward, crying "double standards", despite that Ward was inactive and GGG never fought at 168.

            People are pathetic.

The funny part about all that is it wasn't even about Stevenson chickening out.

Then, flash forward a bit and you have Kathy Duva pulling Kovalev OUT OF a purse bid that would have guaranteed the fight happening...but none of those cats calling Adonis chicken saw fit to paint a yellow stripe down Sergei's back.

              And rightfully so, IMO.

Truth is, it was money and not fear that scuttled the fight both times.

Adonis got a better deal from Showtime and no way was Duva gonna jeopardize the HBO contract by letting Kovalev lose a purse bid, which they would have.

While not getting too far off the subject, Stevenson or Haymon (or both) ruined his career. He fought nobody and has more or less faded into obscurity.

Anyway, whatever the reason why Stevenson didn't fight Kovalev, the feud didn't start until the first negotiations fell through.

I don't think Adonis would say Haymon ruined his career.

Probably the exact opposite, especially monetarily.

Not only did he not fight Kovalev, he didn't even fight Hopkins or Pascal, which would have been big fights. Instead he fought Eastern European barbers, Sakio "Win For Hire" Bika and a couple of security guards from Detroit.
