  • The Sport Of Boxing Should ONLY Have 1 Champion Per Division

boxing has had its share of problems just like any other sport but their was a time when the whole public was captured in the excitement, drama and glory of boxing.

there is obviously something wrong with the sport of boxing and someone needs to fix it. i say boxing does not need to offer so many championship belts to its fighters. the WBA, WBC and IBF are considered the three most well known organizations that offer championship belts. however, there are at least 19 other organizations that offer some kind of recognition to fighters. who can keep track of that? it's way too much. there's no need for more than one champion per weight.

It would be great. Necessary actually. Rather than 150 or whatever 'champions' we could have 17. The actual man in the division ends up with the belt 9/10

Unfortunately, that ship has sailed and the factions involved make far too much money to give up this corrupt piece of **** system we have right now. It's a shame really.

All real boxing fans would rather have one real champion per division than a heap of title holders. It would also mean that having 0 on your record would not mean so much as the best would be forced to fight the best.

that's the other problem in boxing, there is no single authority figure. unlike a sport like professional football and baketball that has a commissioner, boxing is run by (corrupt) state organizations. the sport of boxing is disorganized, it opens boxing up to corruption and drug use. having one central authority figure would streamline the sport and allow the public to have more confidence in the way boxing operates on a day-to-day basis

boxing should has one central controlling body, it's the only most watched sport that does not have a central commission like pro football & basketball, boxing is run by corrupt state organizations whose sole mission is to make money and not care about the athletes

I agree that it would be great, but only if you could guarantee proper administration. With governing bodies, you'd end up with worthy contenders being denied title shots their whole career, and favoured fighters like Chavez Jr having the system rigged in their favour. With rotten organizing bodies, a one belt per division system might even be worse.

Obviously the sport would be a lot better off if you could have it run by an NFL or NBA type organization, but boxing is harder to organize than football or basketball. The outcome is subjective, for one, and you can't really set up leagues or championships in the same way.

Any governing body would have to have supreme power and it would have to be backed 100% by the government. Otherwise the promoters will end up back in charge.

It would make being a world champion have more meaning for one, and to think they called some guys paper champions back when there was one title per division

I've always liked the fact on cutting down on titles. Nowadays it seems like everyone gets called a champ. I kinda like 2 titles per weightclass though to help build up a mega fight between the 2 title holders.

it's the same thing when you've got a 1 and two contender for a vacant lineage, or a number one contender challenging the champion

it will never happen. boxing exists only because it makes people money.
