Technically, there is no ban on chemical weapons.

There are international treaties, to which Syria, the US, Russia, etc., are not signatories to.

No, chemical weapons are banned in international conflicts.

Also the US provided intel on Iranian forces, Iraq used that intel to deploy banned weapons. Conflating these two aspects is misleading.

in usa defense, back then iran was deemed as the bigger threat. even the kuwaitis and saudis who he later invaded/threatened was supporting saddam at the time.

i remember a conversation between a russian ambassador and a kuwaiti prince 1990.

Russian ambassador: "Your highness, I feel bad that those tanks rolling across your border, they are Russian tanks."

Kuwaiti prince: "You feel bad? We paid for those tanks!"
