After that flash KD at the start I don't think Hopkins wanted to risk getting hit over the top with a right hand again.
Hopkins was probably banking on Kovalev bum-rushing and getting antsy for a KO. But KOvalev did the opposite. Used his distance, hand speed, and kept Hopkins at the end of his straight(er) shots.
