Can a fighter really have laid out a blueprint if they lost?

How can you have the blueprint to beat a fighter if you lost, makes no sense.
Mayweather for example, unbeaten in 48 fights but De La Hoya claimed to have the blueprint and passed it on to Canelo who also lost, and then Roach who said he worked on the blueprint for 5 years, his fighter also lost.
