Recession leads to rise in domestic abuse
                    BRIAN DONNELLY February 17 2009
DOMESTIC abuse is increasing as the economic crisis escalates with men said to be "taking their financial fears out on their partners".

The Scottish Domestic Abuse Helpline made the claim as it reported a jump in the number of calls it received over the festive period. Between Boxing Day and January 25 calls increased by 7.5% compared with the same period last year.

Liz Kelly, head of training at the helpline, said: "Many female callers talked about how their partners were taking their money and employment worries out on them.

"The atmosphere in the home was becoming even more strained and there were more short fuses, bouts of aggression and violence than usual." She warned: "The current financial climate should not be used as a reason to abuse - there is absolutely no excuse for any form of domestic abuse."

The number of calls during the month-long period stood at 2347. This is compared with 2183 the previous year.

Ms Kelly called on women suffering abuse to contact the helpline: "Rather than worrying alone, we urge women to pick up the phone - the relief felt may lift some of the weight off their shoulders."

A spokesman for Victim Support Scotland said last night: "We recognise only too well that the economic climate does have a specific bearing on relationships and inevitably as people lose their jobs or as money dries up there will be problems.

"The advice is to seek help in addressing those problems and anyone in such a position could come to us, for instance, where we would seek to provide confidential help."

A spokesman for Scottish Women's Aid said: "It is encouraging to see that the domestic abuse advertising campaign has again resulted in an increase in women contacting the help line for support and raises awareness of the impact of domestic abuse on women and children.

"Whether the increase this year is directly related to the current economic climate is difficult to say at this stage but what ever the reason a partner may give to explain his behaviour doesn't really matter - there is no excuse."

LibDem justice spokesman Robert Brown MSP last night said: "Domestic abuse in any form is unacceptable, regardless of the motivation. We want to see a zero tolerance approach to domestic abuse in Scotland. This report is, however, very relevant as it highlights the extra pressures and risks placed on people in this current financial climate.

"But half of all domestic abuse cases come from repeat offenders. Ministers must place greater emphasis on identifying those people likely to become repeat offenders and protecting their families."

Measures are under way to improve the way police deal with the broader issue of domestic abuse after Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary made a number of recommendations to forces following the publication of statistics which showed more than 50% of cases in 2006-7 involved known repeat victimisation.

There were 49,655 incidents recorded by police in 2007/08, compared to 48,801 the previous year, a rise of 2%. The 2006/7 figure was a 7% increase on the previous year.

A spokesman for the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland said forces were addressing those recommendations that included a national database of victims.

A Scottish Government spokesman said yesterday: "Violence against women must not be tolerated in any form and the current financial climate must not be used as an excuse for violence in the home.

"We know the effects of domestic abuse can be devastating, including on children and young people, and we are determined to tackle it.

"This is why over the next three years the Scottish Government is committing over £44m to tackle violence against women, including supporting the work of Scottish Women's Aid, the Scottish Domestic Abuse Helpline, Rape Crisis Scotland and the network of local rape crisis centres."

Scottish Domestic Abuse Helpline: 0800 027 1234 24 hours a day; 7 days a week (The call is not recorded on the phone bill)
It's funny you say this... because every single serious relationship I have been in.. has involved "Abuse" regardless of the economic performance..

Just that it's always the women who do ALL the hitting.. every single one of them,.. Women are way more violent than men.. men are just a lot more damaging
