Ward won a gold medal at 178 lbs and during the super six said repeatedly that he planned to move up to 175 when it was over, and eventually win a heavyweight title.
Why years later he keeps challenging small middleweights to move up to 168 is anyone's guess.
He was a light heavy in 3 round boxing fights. He already looks pretty small at 168, why should he move up? Ward has the opportunity to become the greatest 168 lbs fighter ever and he should pursue it.
At 168 there's Golovkin, the Dirrells, DeGale, and Groves. Golovkin is the standout fight but it doesn't look like he's moving up any time soon. Ward vs Kovalev at 175 is a big fight. Ward vs Stevenson is an exciting fight as well. Beterbiev could be a threat in time but he's not there yet.
It's all about where the money presents itself next. Golovkin will probably move to 168 in 2016. But if Kovalev/Stevenson beat each other first then that's where he needs to go.
