It's a combination of both. Those fighters from back then had more competitions and most fans tends to be more biased towards them since they grew up watching them.

duran would kill pacquiao. lets get that out of the way, please.

athletes on the whole are getting better

they're getting bigger and stronger. they're also becoming faster
      they're healthier. they last longer.

if you blow out a knee today you're out for six months, if you can afford good medical care.
back in the day you were out for a year or two

before that your career was over.

boxing used to be the most popular sport on the planet

the top 10 athletes in america were always baseball players and the top HW contenders

        always

there were more fighters in new york city, pre WW2, than there are licensed in the entire country today.

boxing is one of the only sports that has devolved. so few people box today compared to the past.

boxing peaked somewhere between 1925 and 1980

today fighters box 2-3 times a year and spends several months on vacation, they dont spend as much time in the gym or have nearly as many fights. back in the day fighters stayed busy and were in the gym year round honing their skills and improving, then testing their skills in the ring on a regular basis further learning. if you had a stylistic weak point it would get exposed in the ring, you couldnt avoid certain styles nearly forever the way fighters do today so you better improve or find another occupation.

you can see the results in the ring, moder fighters are not only fundamentally inferior they are much more one dimensional too. they dont have the skills or the fighting intelligence fighters used to, anyone who truly understands boxing can see that clear as day. there are some exceptions though, a few modern fighters who could hang with the old timers.

the ignorance of the fans doesnt help either, alot of ppl tend to compare moder fighters with the very best ever. match anyone with guys like robinson, armstrong and duran and they will come up short, before their time as well as after.
For the sake of argument, dont you think fighters today (fresher and well rested) beat the old fighters because tougher competition wore them out? (even if your tougher than nails, your body is still made of human cells).

It goes both ways to be honest. Btw 92 dream team is better than this team and that is a fact

Honestly its hard to tell with the really older fighters unless you really take the time to watch the fights and then watch the opponents he fought fights too.

Outside of the heavyweight division, boxing is the one sport that defies what you said, I think. Fighters are the same size, and I don't see any real difference in how fast they move or how hard they hit.
