  • Fighters who become champion for the first time past there prime

Jake la motta was on the slide when he finally got the belt. Also alot of old boxing writers say jack johnson was also past his peak when he becme champion. Archie moore was 39 and had been frozen out the title picture for 10 years when he become champion. Harry greb was fighting with one eye, and had 4 or 5 grueling fights with gene tuney by the time he become champion. Any more?

Joe Gans fought 12 years before winning the lightweight crown.

Sort of. He was about thirty or maybe late twenties or something. He did have a lot of fights though before he became champion.

Would be a looooong list. I think a lot of fighters are at their best when striving for the title, once they have got it they lose the hunger. Hence some potentially great champions only seem to make a couple of defenses and slide, age isn't always a factor in that. Its why I use longevity of reign as a big factor when selecting ATG's.
Liston does come to mind 1st.
