Why the hell do most people think Godfather 2 is better than the first?.

The flashbacks scenes to Italy with De Niro tip the balance in the 2nd one for me.

I can accept that the original probably showcases more of the 'iconic' scenes in the trilogy though.

Casino is the one i think is massively overrated.

Watched it after years of mates near enough begging me to watch it and thought it was a massive let down. Good movie but nowhere near the class of The Godfather or Goodfellas.

I can agree with that, though I do like it. It tries to hard to be like Goodfellas.

part one is more of film driven by it's plot... its much simpler to grasp and easier to follow...

part two is a brilliant character study on both leads and offers better screenplay that welds the dual storylines into one coherent whole... unfortunately at the expense of the plot becoming a bit thinner despite being meatier than it's predecessor as a movie in general...

I love all of the movies mentioned in this thread pretty much, but then I tend to find gangsta movies pretty fascinating even if just done relatively well.

Godfather is a rare master piece though. It's just a timeless, stylish cinematic piece of work that's not in a rush to do one thing to the next, flows well, and is oozing with substance.

Even if you're less entertained by a certain movie, sometimes you just get a special feeling your witnessing something pretty unique that will be highly regarded for years to come. There's good reason so many journalists, members of the public, reviewers, websites, rank sites etc. have Godfather always high, often first. It's because, it's an unaffected, standalone iconic masterpiece.

Only number 2 comes close, Goodfella's and Casino whilst great, simply not in the same breath of achieving the same style, grit, authenticity.

A big plus though was the rise of Michael's dad in the states, which was excellent.

the italian back story was amazing. young michael new to the italian country, courting a pretty young girl by going to her father first and dating using old school italian rules. Young deniro/ don corleone doing work and making his bones in new york getting the best of the don fannucci.

i prefer the first because it was more streamlined and it had brando but its totally understandable when critics and people say part 2 was better. It was much more diverse and deep than the first one.
