  • "The Toy Bulldog" Mickey Walker

    Born 7/13/1901 Mickey was a hard hitting, hard drinking, fighter a classic brawler.Walker was a champion for nine years, and held the welterweight and middleweight titles successively. Walker began fighting at the age of seventeen in Elizabeth,New Jersey from 1919 - 1921. In 1922 he beat Jack Britton in madison square garden to win the welterweight crown. Mickey wouls soon find a new manager Jack Kearns [former of Jack Dempsey]. Walker would move up in 1925 to take on middleweight champion Herry Greb , Walker came in fast but was soon over matched by Greb's speed, Greb won the decision .
    In 1926 Walker lost his welterweight title to Pete Latzo by decision. Looking for a new title Walker went after Tiger Flowers and his middleweight title winning by 10 dec. Mick would move on to lose a ten round decision to Tommy Loughran for the lightheavy champiomnship. In 1931 Walker moved all the way up to heavyweight fighting Jack Sharkey to a draw . The next year Mick would be beaten by TKO 8 by Max Schmeling and give up at heavyweight. Walker fought Maxie Rosenbloom who he had beat before for the LH title but lost a 15 round decision .
    Walker who loved the flashy life style would retire in 1935, with little money to his name.Mick did some acting owned a bar,and became an artist late in life.

        One of my favourites, actually. Love, "The Toy Bulldog," both in name & in nature.

        What a Middleweight he was.
