Facing Mayweather Team Ortiz insist Victor will be the victor

“I finally got to see Berto Ortiz fight last night,” exclaimed Big Steve while doing reps with two one hundred pound dumbbells at our local Y in Glendale:” He was possessed. If he fights like that against Mayweather he might just have a shot.”

Even though Vicious Victor Ortiz will be the defending WBC welterweight champion when he faces Floyd Money Mayweather On September 17th in Las Vegas, few experts give him a chance to retain his belt. Las Vegas book makers have installed Mayweather as an eight to one favorite to beat Ortiz, a mere formality on a way to a much anticipated mega showdown with Manny Pacquaio next year. One expert that believes young Ortiz has a chance is a five time trainer of the year award recipient, Freddie Roach.

“I love Victor Ortiz,” exclaimed Manny Pacquiao’s legendary coach, Freddie Roach when I interviewed him last month at Chumash Casino in Southern California:” I wish him well. He can give me a blue print on how to beat Mayweather. May be we will be fighting Ortiz next and not Mayweather, if he pulls the victory off. I think he has a shot.”

Victor Ortiz and his team are very confident in their chances against Mayweather who is widely considered one of the best boxers pound for pound of today. While interviewed this Sunday by tireless reporter, Elie Seckbach at the Baldwin Park Food for Less where Victor held a special autograph signing session, these are some of the things team Ortiz had to say.

“It’s going to be a good fight,” said Victor’s chief trainer, Danny Garcia when asked to compare it to a fight with Berto:” May be it’s not going to be the same. I think Floyd is going to go down and he is going to be out. I think we are going to knock him out.”

Twenty four year old Victor Ortiz silenced all his critics with a dominant, break out performance over champion Andre Berto earlier this year. Victor showed versatility, dogged determination and warrior’s spirit when he outfought and out boxed previously undefeated champion, Berto.

“You are as good as you last fight, they say. We are doing pretty good then,” said Victor’s strength and conditioning coach, Hoss:” I think Floyd is going to get hurt in this fight. I am not talking about where you get hit and your legs wobble. I am talking about hurt, talking about broken bones; cuts, busted up. I think he is going to get hurt. So, I think a knock out is a very good possibility.”

Curiously enough, a few times that Mayweather has been hurt in the ring were done by left handed fighters, such as Zab Judah and De Marcus Coley. However Mayweather, who considers himself one of the best ever, has been able to find a way to win all of his fights.“Forty one have tried, forty one have failed,” said Mayweather during LA’s press conference. He doesn’t think number forty two; Victor Ortiz will be any different. To make sure he can back up his words Floyd is training like a mad man at his own gym in Chinatown, Las Vegas beating up on sparring partners who are full fledged middleweights.

“Whatever my coach said is exactly what I am going to do,” said Ortiz when asked about the strategy to beat Floyd Mayweather in the biggest fight of his career.

” I am ready for the world,” continued Ortiz with a chip on his shoulder:” Obviously the world doesn’t believe in me, but I can care less. I know what I am here to do. Just watch me September 17th. I am going to drop him. His career is over. He can just say whatever he wants. I love people who bark. I don’t bark, but I bite.”

According to Victor, when he was nine years old he said one day I will become a champion and then I will be the first man the first man to beat Floyd Mayweather. Would the child’s dream become a prophecy?

I don't expect Team Ortiz to think he can't win, I also thik Roach really wants Ortiz to pull the upset. It ain't gonna happen though. sep 17 will be all about Floyd.
