For the most part, the USSR was arming the Arab coalition nations while we were arming Israel pretty much from the creation of Israel.
That included Syria. They've always given/sold them small arms, planes, tanks, artillery, military advisers, etc.
Assad, like his father before him, relied on the USSR (and then later Russia) for these things.
We aren't "giving" Russia anything.
They've been tight with Syria, including propping up their dictators, since before most of us here were alive.
I truly don't know why some of you think it's a bad thing that Arab and Russian blood will keep running in the Middle East, but American blood soon will not.
