Question for MMA fans...

I watch MMA, not as knowledgeable as probably most of you but I have a lagit question.

Why wouldn't they stop the Sanchez vs Kampman fight? Sanchez face was destroyed and even though he was hanging in there and might have won some of those rounds, why didn't they stop it and have the doctor check on him?

He could have had facial fractures, eye problems...all kinds of things. It just makes no sense to me. I see it all the time in MMA, where some guy has a gruesome cut and they just let the action continue.

It's the job of the commission and ref to protect the fighters, in this case they failed miserably. I don't mind blood, if the cut is in a place where it's not threatening but in the 3rd round when the other cut happened under or over (I couldn't even tell at that point) his other eye, why didn't they check him out?

MMA and boxing get enough criticism from the brain injuries and deaths that happen every year, they shouldn't allow **** like this to happen, it's bad for business.

Good question.

But in a sport where you can win in so many ways.........there's more leaniency. That's what I think. I mean a boxer taking a nasty beating can change the fight with 1 punch in many cases........but it's rare. In MMA you can take a heavy beating, catch someone slipping and end the fight with a choke or a limb lock etc.

Then again Diego Sanchez is a tough SOB and dangerous one at that. I mean he's not afraid of pain and can end a fight with a strike or a move.

Yes but no disrespect, that has nothing to do with my point. They didn't even check on him after the second cut, just makes no sense to not even LOOK.

I understand wanting to give the guy a lagit chance of winning but when the ref doesn't even call the doctor in to check on a fighter, I don't understand that.

No no I mean, my point was..........as a bloodsport (moreso than boxing) it's about brutality. There is less sportsmanship in a real fight.

I mean it's No Holds Barred Fighting.

I mean if they were really worried about facial fractures..........they'd force fighters to wear gloves padded with more than 3oz of foam.

Not to mention they'd DQ people for hammering an unconscious person..........which is the first rule of MMA striking.........make sure someone has no chance of getting back on their feet.

The ufc commentators are hilarious a guy will have a superficial wound and they will not stfu about how bad the cut is,but in this fight both men had cuts below the eyebrow and there was little mention of it.

Honestly i was hardcore into mma a few years back but the sport has become stale and boring everyone has sub defense and takedown defense,which turns half of these fights into low level amateur kick boxing.

It's a disgrace, quite frankly. They always do that, and imo, it has everything to do with the UFC. Promoters are quite powerful, as you of course now. The UFC runs everything at their shows though. Lorenzo Fertitta, the UFC owner and billionaire owner of union station casinos, was a member on NSAC. He actually cast the deciding vote not to approve the UFC in Vegas under new rules, then turned around and bought the UFC only to have the very same rules subsequently approved. So even if the officials are technically appointed by commissions, it probably isn't a stretch to say this too is a formality (and they're chosen completely by the UFC when they go abroad, such as in the case of the Australia show last weekend).

There are many examples of doctors being present as mere formalities, and being not allowed to do their jobs at all. This happened in the St. Pierre-Koscheck fight, in which Koscheck had a broken orbital bone, and the ref was literally standing in the way of the doctor, blocking his view and other stuff like that.

So you're right to be suspicious. It's common place in the UFC.

That fracture/monster cut was in the last minute of the fight if I'm not mistaken, there was no break in the action, so I could see why they would let it go.

There are plenty of fights where guys are allowed to continue regardless of obvious career threatening injury. ie Koscheck and as recent as last week's Mark Hunt fight.
