It’s different; in the UK, people from India and Pakistan are known as Asians; while in other countries and majority of the world they are know by their nationalities. Asian people are usually referred to people who live in Far East Asia. Technically, he is Asian, but better refer to him as people from the Subcontinent

asia is a big place.

southwest asia is the middle east area.

south asia is india/pakistan/bangladesh area.

southeast asia is the vietnam/thailand/philippines/indonesia area.

east asia is the japan/korea/china area.

central asia is the kazakhstan/tajikistan/uzbekistan area.

they're all considered asians.


in america , the predominant asians are the chinese/filipinos/koreans/vietnamese east and southeast asians.

so in america when you say asian that's who people think of.

in britain , the predominant asian immigrants are the indians/pakistanis/bangladeshis because india was a british colony and many immigrated from there.

hence why when the brits think asian , they think of the south asians.

doesn't change the fact that all are asians.

that map separates certain regions like central asia , central america , middle east , etc. but those are not continents.


middle east comes from the term near east.

back then the europeans called east asia (china/japan/korea area) the far east and west asia (palestine/saudi arabia/iraq/syria area) the near east.
