MANILA, Philippines – After his notable inclusion in the top pound-for-pound boxers and richest athletes’ lists, Manny Pacquiao has been declared the eighth sexiest man of 2011 by US-based online magazine Salon.

The influential boxer-congressman is grateful for making the cut, telling GMA-7’s “Saksi” on Nov. 28, “Another achievement na naman ‘yan… Pasalamat tayo sa mga bumoto at nagbigay niyan sa’kin,” seemingly blushing at some points.

The magazine, which counted down the 13 sexiest male personalities from various fields, praised Pacquiao’s unique personality as a feisty fighter and a love song buff.

“It’s unlikely for a man with ferocious fists to know his way around a love song,” Salon’s article read, referring to Pacquiao’s performances on the “Jimmy Kimmel Show,” one of which was his version of Dan Hill’s “Sometimes When We Touch.”

But what the staff of the magazine found “hotter” is Pacquiao’s philanthropic side “that hasn’t been seen in any boxer since Muhammad Ali.”

“He’s used his platform to push for good works; instead of bad-mouthing opponents in the run-up to a fight, he urges the audience to wear yellow to call attention to the fight against global poverty. When he gets an audience with Sen. Harry Reid before a fight, he uses it to lobby for a bill that would help the garment industry, and in turn, his fellow countrymen.

“At home in Congress, he’s taken on typhoon relief, improving medical conditions and raising literacy rates. What he can’t achieve politically, Pacquiao handles himself, donating millions to improve living conditions in his poverty-stricken nation,” the article also stated.

Salon noted that their list showcases “a diverse group of men whose appeal comes from something other than rock-hard abs, blessed bone structure and blindingly white teeth. The actors, politicians, writers and athletes who made our list have done so by dint of their cultural relevance, intelligence, principles, talent — or simply the unconventionality of their charm.”

In the same “Saksi” report, Pacquiao made a lighthearted comment on the praise he received from Salon.

“Siyempre, a fighter is a lover,” he quipped.

    More celebrations

Meanwhile, the celebration for Pacquiao’s most recent (and likewise controversial) victory against Juan Manuel Marquez is apparently not yet over as the former’s fellow congressmen held a victory party for him last Nov. 28 at Resorts World Manila in Pasay City. The said establishment shouldered the expenses for the event, according to “Saksi.”

Pacquiao thanked his colleagues for the special gathering, saying, “Maraming salamat sa mga kasamahan kong congressman sa surprise dinner na binigay nila sa’kin at ‘tong party na ‘to. Thank you sa todo-suporta.”

His fellow congressmen believe that despite all the controversies surrounding his win, Pacquiao had definitely prevailed over Marquez.

“Aside from being a Filipino, he’s one of us (congressmen), so we’re really proud of him. And sabi ko nga, san ka nakakita—na mula nang inimbento ang boxing—ng nakakuha ng eight division titles. Close ang labanan, pero in the final analysis, talagang walang duda, tulad ng sinabi ng mga huwes…” said Rep. Amado Bagatsing, chairman of the Commission on Games and Amusements, on 'Saksi."

The party was filled with singing, dancing, and paying tribute to Pacquiao’s success, the report added. One of the highlights of the night was his duet of “Sometimes When We Touch” with “Miss Saigon” alumna Ima Castro, reported “Umagang Kay Ganda” on Nov. 29.

“Saksi” also reported that Pacquiao’s mother Dionisia would be discharged from the hospital on Nov. 29. Mommy D underwent checkup for her heart and pneumonia.
