  • Willie Pep

Willie Pep is one of the greatest defensive boxers of all time. In my eyes, he just might have the best overall footwork Ive ever seen. Many people look at him as the third greatest fighter of all time. Heres a quick look at his body of work.

-Pedro Hernandez, top 5 at FW
-Bobby Ivy, top 10 at FW
    -Chalky Wright, reigning FW champ
-Sal Bartolox2, top 3 at FW
    -Manuel Ortiz, bantamweight champ, HOF
-Chalky Wrightx2, #1 rated at FW
-Charley Lewis, top 10 at FW
-Phil Terranova, #2 rated at FW
-Sal Bartolo, #1 rated at FW
-Jackie Graves, top ten at FW
    -Chalky Wright, #2 at FW
-Humberto Sierrax2, #1 at FW after beating Sandy Saddler
-Jock Leslie, top ten at FW
    -Sandy Saddler, FW champ, HOF
-Eddie Compo, top ten at FW
-Charley Riley, top ten at FW
    -Ray Famechon, #2 at FW

feel free to supplement this if I missed anything, he had a LOT of fights.

Pep fought a long list of contenders, now forgotten but then relevant opponents. For example a fighter like Charley Riley looks plenty strong and tough on film, yet he was knocked out by Willie Pep. It's a shame we have missed out on some of his prime performances, Pep could put on another gear when needed to.

Ive been watching all the Pep I can find lately and the guy is amazing. He is really the best pure boxer I have ever seen. People always talk about his defense but he also had so much more. I have never seen someone use a jab or win more rounds with it then Pep. And I definitely agree on the footwork thing its just awesome to watch him work angles. He could spin a guy like no one I've ever seen.
