i'd have to say kubrick but my personal favorites would be hitchcock or scorsese. it really boils down to opinions. there's other guys out there like kazan, welles, lumet, and coppola.

Kubrick, then Scorsese a close second

Nolan's too young (as a director) compared to the likes of Tarantino & Cameron, replace him with Fincher or Ridley Scott

Out of that list it's unequivocably Kubrick.

But currently........Paul Thomas Anderson, hands down.

Speilberg makes like 30 movies per decade and is not as stylized and exclusive as the others here.

The thing all these directors have in common is that they put real time and effort into their work and dont shoot filler films and pointless sequels like the Lost world Eeeek.

Take him out and add Sir Ridley Scott instead.

                  Aliens
                  Blade Runner
                  Thelma and Louise
                  Gladiator
                  Blackhawk Down
I'm hoping Prometheus joins this list.

you are correct... but if i may add, steve has more than what it takes to hang with the elite if he decides to get serious... amistad, schindler's list, colour purple and private ryan comes to mind...

and i would like to take this opportunity to give shouts to the asian guys who i personally think are among the best in the business currently working...
ang lee, zhang yimou and hayao miyazaki...

these guys along with peter jackson, brad bird, pete docter, chris nolan and cameron crowe are P4P the best right now...

                    JMO of course ...
