I need help with Defence on FNR4

Any pointers, right now i occasionally slip a punch, i'm starting to kind of get a feel for stepping back and countering, but side to side and leaning doesn't do anything, i keep getting hit. So for the most part I just keep my hands up and hope I can wear a dude out.

Also i fought a dude who just did the windmill spin defence thing, and i couldn't hardly hit him, how do i fight those dudes?
