[PLEASE HELP] Ask movie title

The story is about african-american life, if i'm not mistaken the time set is before 1900s, the main theme of the movie is racial issue and there're a scene almost at the end of the movie when a man shoot a horse from outside the barn. the shooting itself is an act of mercy because the barn is on fire.

it was incredible movie, i see it when i was a kid almost 20 years ago.
that scene is the thing i can remember vividly the main character was crying because he love the horse so much, i also remember the main character and the supporting character like wearing overall jeans.

Anybody know???

i cant clearly remember, i think is the south because the white is so racist to the black farmer.
