  • Opinions on the Aztec Civilization

hee Aztec people were certain ethnic groups of central Mexico, particularly those groups who spoke the Nahuatl language and who dominated large parts of Mesoamerica in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, a period referred to as the Late post-Classic period in Mesoamerican chronology.

Often the term "Aztec" refers exclusively to the people of Tenochtitlan, situated on an island in Lake Texcoco, who called themselves Mexica Tenochca or Colhua-Mexica.

Not really concerning the Aztecs, but Mexican-Americans who nuthug on the Aztec history. Especially when it's a possibilty that they have no Aztec roots in them at all. If you're family/ancestors are from Mexico City, Guerrero, Morelos and a few other neighboring parts then fine. But if you're Nuevo Leon and those northern parts, don't be so fast to get an Aztec tattoo.

Agreed.....to an extent....in general the Aztec civilization being the biggest and most powerful are widely recognized so many folks can trace back to them as they were the last great civilization to be prominently around prior to the spaniards....however....you are right in that not all Mexicans come from the Aztec blood line...Zapoteca, Mixteca, Chichimeca, Olmeca, these were all civilizations that many of us (if we dig deep enough past the Aztecs) can trace roots back to....

Yea but I think that trying to accurately trace your roots back to a specific tribe is very difficult. For most people of Mexican decent at least.

I think when people get tattoo's of Aztec or Mayan history, it's more a sense of national and ethnic pride more than anything else and there's nothing wrong with that...

The Aztecs have a very interesting history.

They sacrificed lives because they thought if they didn't than the sun would fall from the sky. They sacrificed a King's daughter and then he went after them. They ended up taking off on a boat. After a while they seen a bird eating a serpent (the symbol on the Mexican flag) and they thought it was a sign that that is where they should stop. Then they built their amazing empire there.

Very intersting, but logical in their thoughts.

Like the poster above me stated with his examples, it may seem that they had a general about what happened every day, hence the rituals and whatnot.

              Bottom line: badass civilization.
