    • Tom Brady and co. kick-off their 2011 campaign with a trip to the Sunshine State. Can they overcome the Dolphins? Andy Richmond selects the best bets.

New England Patriots @ Miami Dolphins
      Monday September 12th
      Live on ESPN 23:55

      New England 1.35 @ Miami 3.85

The last time these two met resulted in a resounding 31-point thrashing for the Dolphins when, on the back of an 8-0 second half of the season, New England looked to be marching easily into the play-offs. That made them 14-2 on the season and meant home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. They were overwhelming favourites to reach their fifth Super Bowl of the Bill Belichick era but, instead, fizzled out early. Brady and the Patriots were uncharacteristically sloppy in a 28-21 loss to a Jets team they'd beaten 45-3 six weeks earlier.

That second succesive early exit from the post-season has made them invest in experience. They have added high-profile veterans to their roster, including six-time Pro Bowl receiver Chad Ochocinco and talented but troubled defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. Ochocinco bids to give quarterback Tom Brady another solid target amongst his receiving corps and they will provide a stern test for Miami's cornerback duo of Vontae Davis and Sean Smith, sometimes referred to as the best in the league. If you add in linebacker Cameron Wake and Jason Taylor, it would be a surprise if Brady was able to put 38 points on them on Monday night.

The Dolphins may well be able to stop points a little better this time but can they put any points on the board of their own? Quarterback Chad Henne is not exactly the fans' favourite. The Dolphins averaged 3.7 yards per carry and 17.1 points last season, both 30th in the league. They also lost three times by three points or fewer - all at home, where they were a dreadful 1-7 and that is a record they desperately need to improve this season.

New England have won seven straight games on the opening weekend, the NFL's second-longest active streak behind Pittsburgh's eight. The Dolphins, meanwhile, have lost their past five home openers. They are a team in transition and will struggle on offence whilst Henne is under centre.

Brady may struggle to put the Dolphins to the sword like he did the last time the two sides met but there is still enough of a gap between the two sides to suspect that the experience of the Patriots will prove too much on this occasion.

      Recommended Bet
Back New England Patriots -7.5 @ 2.18 or better

By the way I had a bet on Jets, Patriots and the Broncos.
