I'm 37 and I really wanted to learn boxing, so I joined a gym. What can I expect, and what should I focus on first?

As a newbie myself to the sport (since may this year and i'm 31!) then i would definitely recommend focusing heavily on footwork.
Good footwork will enable you to get into range, get out again hopefully without taking any punches and also give you a solid base to enable your punches to have maximum effect.
Think of it as building a castle, build it on poor foundations and it will sink. Get the foundations right and you will have a castle that stands for years to come!
Best of luck!

Thanks for the advice. I have always admired good footwork and boxers who get into position with good angles. I suppose their punches hurt more. So far, all I do is shadow box, jump rope, heavy bag, speed bag, and situps and pushups.

I started at 55 years old, this is my third year. I have an ex pro trainer. You are not to old. As some of the other posters have recommended get your foot work down first. Never cross your feet. Work on levels in your boxing stance. Start by working your jab then add your cross. Assuming your orthodox after you get the 1/2 down work on your left hooks on the heavy bag then upper cuts on the aqua ball only. Hit the speed bag before every session. You should train at least 3 times a week for at least an hour.

I agree on footwork and jab first, you can do both. Feet, stance, etc. all work the foundation for your house. Constantly learn that while working your jab. You will probably want to sneak in the cross as well but make it the secondary focus.
If you are at a place that does fitness boxing and you decide to get in on that, make sure you don't get caught up in trying to keep pace or all your form will go away. Go slow enough to use good form.

I also play competitive baseball in an adult league (Sundays) and lift weights/cardio 6 days a week in addition to boxing 3 days a week. I have this schedule for 6 months then take 6 off and drink beer and just do weights/cardio 3 days a week.
