Ok, so iw as all set to start training about 30 minutes from me at a Renzo Gracie school, under a Renzo purple belt. Then my gall attcks got bad and i had to have surgery, comletely out of the blue and unexpectantly. This gave me time to think it through and for someone like myself, looking not only to learn an art, but to gain personal fitness, weight loss, etc. as well, it just didn't seem like its what i really was looking for.
I've found a new place and spent 3 hours observing there last night. The commute would be cut in half, only about 15 minutes from home, the classes are small, the facilities are HUGE with 155 pound heavy bags, lots of mat area, weight training area, etc.
So what do they train in there you ask? well i'd be taking up Jun Fan Gung Fu/Jeet Kune Do, Integrated Grappling systems as he calls it (which combines BJJ, Sambo, and wrestling) Kali and Kun Tao. Its well rounded, seems to be more of a work out in terms of cardio imo.
He knows about nutritional stuff and says he would definately help me out with learning how to better my diet and help to get me down to the weight i want to be at. For the same price as the gracie place i have all of this and full use of the facility, with classes held 5 days per week, as many as i want to attend. (gracies was 3 days max/week)
What do you think of these arts? they are said to blend well together and its really a wide range of training as you get a bit of everything. I felt comfortable there, the owner/head instructor seems very knowledgable, as well as the assistants.
