  • My actual top ten HW list.

    1. Joe Louis
    2. Muhammad Ali
    3. Larry Holmes
    4. Rocky Marciano
    5. Jack Dempsey
    6. Joe Frazier
    7. Sonny Liston
    8. George Foreman
    9. Jim Jeffries
    10. Ezzard Charles

The bottom five tend to change pretty frequently for me.

My criteria is something like 75% career achievement and 25% head to head matchups with all fighters being in their prime. Keep in mind, for example, that I'm not saying Frazier would have beaten Liston, Foreman, Jeffries, and Charles for sure, just that on his best night he would have presented a greater challenge to most (non champion) heavyweights in history then the men below him.

Only because I haven't seen Langford on film. This is my fault, as it's there to be seen, and I'd like to remedy that some day.

Even Jeffries I've seen footage of (albeit limited footage and not entire fights) but of Langford not even a ten second clip.

Everything I read about the guy I like though. The fact that he could beat a big, powerful, and skilled HW like Wills says so much about him. He seemed to have it all: defensive skill, combination punching to the head and body, speed of hand, two fisted KO power, durability, stamina, strength, and a great heart. All on a short, long armed, bull necked body.

I just need to see some of his fights.

Holy crap! Where did you order those fights? I really want to see all of them but the ones highlighted are the ones I have particular interest in. I'm going to have to just start buying these fights. That and get ESPN classic (once I get back home) so I can see more of these pre-1960 fights.
