Pacquiao is Still King Among Hot 100 Boxing Stars
    Paul Magno, Yahoo! Contributor Network
    Aug 11, 2011

Manny Pacquiao, for the second straight survey period, sits atop the list of boxing's biggest, brightest stars on the sport's Hot 100 list.

In the first follow-up to the groundbreaking study, The Top 100 stars in the sport have been assessed, based on popularity and public interest throughout the world by using Google Keyword Search technology.

The methodology used in this survey is the same used for over a decade by internet marketing experts to determine trends in popularity and market awareness. The Google Keyword Tool determines how many monthly searches are initiated on Google for specific words, names, or phrases across the world. The results are regarded by the marketing industry as a fair indication of popularity and name awareness. For the sake of this study, and to allow for natural fluctuations in publicity as fights approach and pass, results were tabulated and averaged over the course of four months (US search totals were used to break ties)

Click these links for specific Top 20 results from The United States, The United Kingdom, The Philippines, Germany, Japan, Mexico, and Canada.

Also, Click HERE for a division by division breakdown of the fighters in this list.

    • How much longer does Manny Pacquiao have?

How much longer does Manny Pacquiao have?
      August 11th, 2011
      Darren Barcomb

As he approaches the age of 33, many boxing fans are wondering just how much longer they will be able to enjoy the fighting talents of the current #1 pound-for-pound pugilist Manny Pacquiao. As he gears up for his November matchup with Juan Manuel Marquez, the question lingers; what is there left to prove?

Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KO’S) will be facing Marquez (53-6-1, 39 KO’s) for the third time. In May of 2004, the two battled to a draw, while Pacquiao took the rematch in March of 2008 by way of a split decision. In the wake of failed negotiations to lure Floyd Mayweather Jr. into a Pacquiao super bout, Marquez was a logical choice for the Pac Man; an interesting opponent with some history and the ability to sell pay-per-view buys.

Pacquiao will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest boxers of all time having won titles in eight divisions. When he faces Marquez in November, he will be defending the WBO welterweight world title, and is showing no signs of slowing down. His last fight, in May, Pacquiao rumbled past challenger Shane Mosley in route to a lopsided unanimous decision victory. When he faces Marquez, he will be going for his 15th straight victory, an astonishing fact when considering the opposition he has faced.

During the current streak, Pacquiao has beaten the likes of Mosley, Marquez, Antonio Margarito, Joshua Clottey, Miguel Angel Cotto, Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, David Diaz, Marco Antonio Barrera, Jorge Solis, Erik Morales (twice), Oscar Larios, and Hector Velazquez. That certainly is a who’s- who in the boxing world and guarantees Pacquiao his place as an all time great.

With his pedigree without question, the real issue is how much longer until Pacquiao decides to pursue his other worldly talents exclusively instead of boxing. As is well known, Pacquiao was elected to the House of Representatives in the Congress of the Philippines. Vastly popular in his homeland, it is surmised that Pacquiao will continue to pursue political standing as he continues to give back to the community.

On top of the political aspirations, Pacquiao also faces the prospect of continued endorsements, acting opportunities, and sponsorships. Very few individuals in the entertainment world have the appeal and marketability of Manny Pacquiao. Take for example his recent singing ventures, commercial appearances, and main stream credibility; there is very little that Pacquiao does not excel at doing.

Back in the 1980’s Nike launched an advertisement campaign surrounding two sport athlete Bo Jackson titled, “Bo Knows”. The scenarios revolved around how Bo Jackson could jettison to the top of any venture and did a little of everything with ease. Well, Manny Pacquiao is this generation’s Bo Jackson times ten. “Pac Man Knows” really does sum up Manny Pacquiao’s career and in fact entire life quite well.

Having accomplished more than enough in the boxing world, and with Floyd Mayweather Jr. not likely on the horizon, many question how much longer Pacquiao will have the ambition and drive to go through the strenuous hazards of a boxing lifestyle. Someday soon, Pacquiao will take his talents and serve and entertain in different ways, and boxing fans will be reduced to watching old videos and wishing Pacquiao had stayed around just a bit longer.

That time is coming soon fans, probably in a few years. With that in mind, savor the end to the Marquez trilogy in November. Watch and learn from an all time great as he does what he does best. Each and every Manny Pacquiao fights could be one of the last ever, and that truly makes each one unique and a cannot-miss fight. Enjoy!

      • Underdog Boxing: Top Rank to stage Pacquiao-Marquez 3 World Press Tour in Manila

Underdog Boxing: Top Rank to stage Pacquiao-Marquez 3 World Press Tour in Manila
        By CARLO L. PAMINTUAN
        August 12, 2011

Manny Pacquiao versus Juan Manuel Marquez is without a doubt one of the best boxing rivalries in this generation. The two have given us a couple of intense fights and the results of which still inspire debates among boxing fans.

Some say Pacquiao should have won the first fight because one of the judges failed to score the first round as 10-6 to his favor but others claim that Marquez should’ve been given the nod because he won a majority of the next 11 rounds.

The same drama surrounded the second fight. Many thought Pacquiao was rightfully awarded the split decision victory while others scored it for Marquez. But whoever side you’re on, there’s no denying the fact that when these two get in the ring against each other scorching action is soon to follow.

Bob Arum plans to make their third fight the biggest ever. Part 1 of the plan has already been settled and this was to head back to cable giant HBO after a brief stint with Showtime. The second part is a press tour that will take Pacquiao and Marquez to five major cities around the world to promote their fight.

Luckily for Filipino fans, Top Rank decided that Manila will be the first leg of the tour which means that Pacquiao’s fans will have the chance to size up Marquez before the two complete their trilogy in November.

The event will be held at the Quirino Grandstand on September 23. The day will begin with the two combatants hearing Mass together inside a soon-to-be-determined church in Manila. It will then be followed by a press conference at the Manila Hotel and, immediately after this, Pacquiao and Marquez will both walk to the Quirino Grandstand to officially start the event.

This will be the Mexican’s second visit to the country. The first one was meant to coax Pacquiao into another match but it fell on deaf ears. Now, Marquez no longer needs to beg for another shot at Pacquiao. Even though Filipinos see Marquez as a thorn in Pacquiao’s side for all these years, they still respect him because of his boxing savvy and his ability to get up every time he gets knocked down. It’s safe to say that Marquez, together with his entourage which includes legendary trainer Nacho Beristain, will enjoy a warm welcome in Manila.

Aside from Pacquiao and Marquez, other celebrities will also be part of the celebration. There will be bands, singers, dancers, and other performers who will make it an event to remember. There will also be cultural presentations to celebrate the rich heritage of the Philippines and Mexico.

Arum wants to start the Pacquiao-Marquez 3 promotions with a bang and he definitely chose the best place to start. The third fight between Pacquiao and Marquez will be fought in the welterweight division with a catchweight of 144 pounds. It will be Pacquiao’s third defense of the WBO welterweight title he won from Miguel Cotto. --OMG, GMA News

        • How a former "takatak boy" from the streets of GenSan caused a ruckus in HBO Sports

How a former "takatak boy" from the streets of GenSan caused a ruckus in HBO Sports
          By Rich Mazon

After weeks of deliberating, Top Rank Promotions finally revealed the last remaining puzzle in the Manny Pacquiao - Juan Manuel Marquez trilogy. The question on which television network between HBO and SHOWTIME will be the lucky one to broadcast this huge sporting event is finally answered. We all know the story. HBO who has long been the standard pay per view (PPV) distributor of previous Pacquiao fights was left in the cold early this year after Top Rank head master Bob Arum took its star pupil in Pacquiao to rival SHOWTIME.

The decision stemmed from Arum's aversion to HBO's preference of rival Golden Boy Promotions of Oscar Dela Hoya and boxing manager Al Haymon. Arum's decision caught HBO by surprise and lost this year's top moneymaker of a fight in Pacquiao versus Shane Mosley last May. The fight drew 1.3 million in pay per view (PPV) buys. This to the dismay of the top echelon of HBO which lead to the resignation of Ross Greenburg, HBO's long time head of its Sports Division last month.

People do wonder if he was instead fired not only of the Pacquiao - Mosley debacle. Greenburg apparently did not inform the hierarchy of HBO that they could lose Pacquiao until it was too late, hence preventing further intervention from the execs of the network. It was the sword of Damocles hanging on Greenburg's head for the past six months now. The sword that eventually fell last month with the news of Greenburg's resignation. Greenburg dismissed the Pacquiao - Mosley lost to just a "one-fight deal." He stated that "I'm over it." And added that it wouldn't "upset HBO's positioning as the premiere boxing network."

But is it really just a one-fight deal? With the announcement of Pacquiao versus Marquez III, also comes the question, Will Pacquiao continue with SHOWTIME or return to the HBO fold? And the decision came two weeks after Greenburg tendered his so called "resignation". There is no better proof of Greenburg's exit from the network than that. There hasn't this much mystery before with the choice of a network to deliver a fight. All big fights go to HBO, the leader in boxing broadcasting. That is a fact.

Arum's move of the Pacquiao - Mosley event is both a protest and a bold one. His long deliverance of his decision to announce the Pacquiao - Marquez carrier is a brilliant one. A brilliant move that can never be accomplished without his not so secret ace, Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao brings in the money and HBO knows it. He has brought in more than a million pay per view buys for his fights against Mosley, Margarito, Cotto and Dela Hoya. He is at par with Hall of Famer and former box office draw Mike Tyson with the fighter with at least a million PPV buys for four consecutive years. And another potential one million buys in November 12 is a hard thing to ignore for HBO. They say that everyone follows where the money is and Pacquiao is where the money is at. HBO knows this. Bob Arum knows this and knows that HBO knows it. The former cigarette vendor from General Santos City or popularly known as "takatak boys" which comes from the sound they emit by opening and closing a certain part of their cigarette box to call people's attention is Bob Arum's ace on his sleeve. An ace that beats all other aces. Even the very influential ace in Ross Greenburg.

The funny and interesting thing about all of this is that Manny Pacquiao has not personally done a thing to effect the outcomes of the recent events in HBO, SHOWTIME and Top Rank Promotions other than be Manny Pacquiao. He has not forced his will or influence on anybody involved in these discussions. He has not even addressed the issue on any interviews of him that I could recall. He was even surprised in an interview with the Philippine media early this year when he learned upon that his fight with Mosley won't be on HBO but SHOWTIME. Manny is so out of the loop with discussions that involves him yet it does not bother him. When Michael Koncz briefed him the advantages of going to SHOWTIME on that interview, all he uttered was "That's good." The man who is the center of it all is a just a man looking in yet his silent influence is the reason of it all. This has always been Manny Pacquiao. His job is to fight he says, he leaves everything else to his promoter and advisers. Anything else besides the fight itself is mundane to this former takatak boy cum doughnut peddler of the streets of GenSan, even if that involves a billion dollar entity such as HBO.

Who would know that the former "takatak and doughnut boy of the City of Dust in this impoverished southern part of the Philippines will have this much influence on the most successful premium television company with headquarters in the heart of New York City. Who would have imagined that a boxer whose first pay check was a mere 100 pesos or two dollars will cause a ruckus in the ranks of a billion dollar organization such as HBO? This without even him neither knowing it nor intending it to happen. This with him being thousands of miles away from the negotiating table that decides his next multi-million endeavor. Ah, the wheels of fortune. You can never tell the way it turns.

MANILA, Philippines - In a impressive technical KO, undefeated Filipino super bantamweight Juan Miguel "Mig" Elorde, grandson of legendary hall-of-fame world champion Gabriel "Flash" Elorde destroyed brave compatriot Saddam Eyo to win his 10th professional fight Thursday night (Aug. 11) at the Sofitel Plaza Hotel in Manila, Philippines.

One powerful left hook thrown by Elorde broke the lower gum of Saddam Eyo forcing the brave Cavite figher to surrender from obvious pain. The dramatic development prompted referee-lawyer Danrex Tapdasan to stop the combat at 2:24 of the third stanza.

GAB's ring physician Doctora Mae Bañez, who spent minutes applying pressure on Eyo's wound to stop the bleeding, informed Philboxing that "he (Saddam Eyo) has got a broken lower gum, was bleeding a lot, probably his whole jaw was broken. He needs x-rays and medical treatment."

During the three rounds of fight, "Migs" Elorde looked fast and accurate while showcasing his good boxing skills in front of his biggest fan and supporter, his grandmother Madame Laura Elorde.

Welterweight world champion Manny Pacquiao as well as distinguished members of the Rotary Club attended the suit-and-tie boxing event staged at the grand ballroom of the Sofitel Plaza Hotel.

Bantamweight Monico Laurente (20-7, 4KO's) of Agusan del Sur went all the way in a toe-to-toe rumble to claim a unanimous 10-rounds desicion over Prell Tupas (7-11, 1KO).

In a battle of lightweights, Surigao's kid Jeffrey Arienza (7-0-1, 3KO's) kept intact his undefeated record by dismantling Joan de Guia of Samar by technical KO in the third round.

Unbeaten 19-year-old rookie Orlan Vasquez (4-0, 1KO) of Bohol won a 6-rounds unanimous desicion over Leonardo Talisic (2-8-1, 1KO).

              • Donaire excited about his return to the ring

DONAIRE EXCITED ABOUT HIS RETURN TO THE RING
                By Ronnie Nathanielsz
                PhilBoxing.com
                Fri, 12 Aug 2011

WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is excited about his return to the ring on November 5, six days before his church wedding to Rachel Marcial, a former taekwondo champion in the US.

Donaire told the Daily Inquirer that fighting just six days before his wedding “is no problem as long as I don’t get injured. Actually I am excited that I will fight and that it will be followed by my wedding.”

He said this would put “plenty of pressure especially on me in the training camp. I must not get hurt so I will need to train very hard.”

Donaire who up to now doesn’t know who his opponent will be said “I don’t pick my opponents but I prefer the very best so it would drive me to train very hard because if I meet the best it motivates me to be at my best in training. If that happens I know nobody can beat me.”

He said “in my heart and in my mind, body and spirit I know I will give it everything.”

Donaire who returned to the fold of Top Rank said he is eager to fight the winner of the October clash between champions Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan and Rafael Marquez of Mexico as promised by Arum. He said the planned January 2012 showdown with the winner “will be a great fight. For me to face the winner is exciting because they are both champions and they are both great fighters.”

Donaire who is ranked No. 3 in the pound for pound rankings of the prestigious Ring Magazine said “if my opponent is good I enjoy the fight even more.”

Noting that he is looking at a fourth world title at 122 pounds against the winner of the Nisioka-Marquez battle, Donaire said he had “no problem at the weight” although he had enjoyed the food in the Philippines and had gone up to 145 pounds but had come down to between 133-134 pounds.

Donaire said he will train at the Undisputed Gym in San Francisco under former world champion Robert Garcia and at times would train at the Oxnard Gym.

He said it was convenient to train in the Bay Area of California not because of the availability of good sparring partners but more because his training staff including his strength and conditioning coach, his speed trainer and his nutritionist were all there together.

Donaire who has set his eyes on more world titles said “if the Lord gives me a chance to win six it would be a blessing. I will do all I can and train hard to make it come true.”

Now that his contractual differences with Arum and Top Rank have been resolved Donaire said “ U am excited because I have no problems to think about and I am excited to return for a fight and of course my wedding.”

Donaire attended a confirmation mass at the San Miguel church next to Malacanang on Thursday afternoon which he described as “something I needed to do. It’s a beginning for a family. I believe that if I want to have a family this (confirmation) has to happen. This is the first step and in preparation for my wedding.”

Pacquiao prediction: Mayweather tiff will happen next year
                  By Ronnie Nathanielsz
                  Philippine Daily Inquirer
                  7:16 pm | Friday, August 12th, 2011

MANILA—Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao is confident he will face Floyd Mayweather Jr. sometime next year—even if the latest condition set by the undefeated American looks like yet another reason to dodge the Filipino ring icon.

“I will fight Mayweather next year,” said the Sarangani congressman, who plans to fight two or three more times before hanging up his gloves.

Pacquiao made the statement in an interview with the Inquirer and Australia’s KO Boxing television host and promoter Peter Maniatis at the Sofitel Hotel on Thursday evening.

Pacquiao, who was special guest and inducting officer at a Manila Rotary Club District 101 event where Liza Elorde was installed as president, is confident his promoter, Top Rank chief bob Arum, can successfully negotiate an eagerly awaited megabuck fight between two of the sport’s biggest stars.

Previous negotiations had collapsed over the insistence of the Mayweather camp on random, Olympic-style drug protocols.

But Pacquiao and Arum have now made public statements that they will agree to the tests demanded by the Mayweather camp, eliminating what has been the only stumbling block to the fight.

                  Or so, Team Pacquiao thought.

Arum, however, revealed that Team Mayweather has set yet another condition for the fight to push through.

“Mayweather’s crazy father (Floyd Sr.) says ‘yes’ but he (Pacquiao) is not allowed to train in the Philippines. This is bizarre,” Arum said.

“We are certainly not the impediment for that fight to happen,” Arum had earlier told the Inquirer. “We will do whatever we can to make that fight happen. But you can’t chase this guy because if you do, you’ll accomplish nothing.”

Pacquiao could be done with the sport in the next two years and has set his sights on concentrating on his duties as a congressman.

Pacquiao said he expects another difficult fight in his trilogy with Juan Manuel Marquez on Nov. 12 in Las Vegas.

“Boxing world just doesn’t seem the same without Manny Pacquiao in it,” exclaimed Big Steve during our morning java at Starbucks on Western Avenue in Glendale:” What is Pacman doing these days?”

While his trusted promoter Bob Arum has just finalized a lucrative deal with HBO to televise and distribute Pacquiao Marquez rubber match on November 12th in Las Vegas and final preparations are being made for a World wide promotional tour for the upcoming bout, Congressman Manny Pacquiao is at home in Philippines working to help his people. Last week Pacquaio has signed yet another promotional deal which aims to create thousands of jobs and cut unemployment in Philippines.

Last week Internet Media Direct, a global marketing company has signed an endorsement deal with Manny Pacquiao, a world famous boxer, a Philippine congressman, and a national hero for his pugilistic conquests and philanthropic endeavors. This endorsement agreement includes use of name and image, official role as a company spokesperson, personal appearances, media clips and co-branding initiatives as well as activities on behalf of Internet media Direct.

Pacquiao wanted to be more involved in the company. “It’s not about money, it’s not about endorsements,” stated Robert Klayman, CEO of Internet Media Direct:” It is about creating thousands of jobs in Philippines.”

Internet media Direct, LLC intends to open several telemarketing call centers in Philippines to generate jobs for local residents. As agreed with congressman Pacquiao they will also set up call centers in Sarangani Province for the constituents of Pacman. Over-all plan is to set up 20,000 seats, generating 50,000 jobs within next five years.

“I just want to make people happy,” said Pacquaio. Pound for pound king of boxing/political leader does it in and out of the ring.
