Is Canelo genetically unable to increase his stamina?

His stamina actually improved a bit at 160 since he didn't have to drain himself to go all the way down to below 154. Also, one tends to improve on stamina as they get a bit older.

I think that he can improve a bit in this area but as some have said, not everyone is born with great stamina.

It's obvious why he has piss poor stamina. It's because of the way he fights. He prioritizes way too much explosive moves with his combinations and defensive manuevers. He doesn't have the skill or calm cool temperament to fight in a phone booth, slipping shots by centimeters, with slight smooth calculations. Instead he uses every muscle in his body, from his feet to his head, to explosively make a quick strenuous move rather than a well timed smooth calculation that prioritizes conservative technical ability. IMO he's going to burn himself out and crash and burn the way he fights. Well unless he returns to 155. Beyond that though he won't last above 154, he just doesn't have that 3rd gear, let alone 4th or 5th gear to get the job done whether its winning every crucial exchange when behind on points or taking out a wounded opponent. He doesn't have that kind of power to continue being a defensive first guy.

I think you're right, Cotto has had a similar stamina issue and he uses explosive movements as well.

And even comparing those two, Cotto is much more conservative in his ring movements. Some guys who are in a class of their own as amazing athletes or even just their physical build, can get away with a turbulent free wheeling style. Some of these guys that come to mind is Mosley, Floyd, Pacquiao, they all could throw a thousand punches a night in their haye day. Well Canelo, in his respective prime, is not the same animal as those guys. He should take notes from experienced superiors to himself like Chavez Sr, Duran and even Golovkin. All physically big guys that were able to emody a style that moved like water. Canelos biggest flaw is he doesn't understand momentum. You have to be a ferocious competitor to be great and that comes with taking no liberties in giving your opponent an unnessecary edge. But yea with Cotto he genuinely has to be explosive, especially when its against a 180lb guy in Canelo, to stay competitve/safe. Cotto is a tiny 154lber IMO

I think that's the key. Someone who can put constant pressure, while keeping a high work rate. By pressure I mean Chavez sr. vs Rosario pressure. Cut off the ring and be on his ass, not letting him rest.

That definitely isn't helping him & I've heard the same. Know who else has well known stamina problems & doesn't like doing roadwork. The guy Floyd just KO'd.

Bo was a bad mofo. And I was just saying we all got highs & lows athletically in our DNA & Bo is a cat who had some really good f#cking highs & Canelo is a guy who I believe might have some bad f#cking lows with running/stamina cuz of DNA.

So idk how much he can actually bump up his stamina in the first place. Everyone athletic can't be great at everything & maybe one of Canelo's lows is his stamina & there isn't anything he'll ever be able to do about it that'll have him looking like Floyd in regards to stamina.

I don't actually think his stamina is that bad. Definitely a weakness of his, especially if he wants to be in that elite league of names.

No. It is an issue in his conditioning. It probably does not help that he fights just 2x a year. Who knows how well he stays in shape in between fights. But it is a problem that needs to be solved by his team.

Very very good post! His boxing style uses up a lot of energy to begin with.
