Theres alot of guys of all ages with vast amounts of boxing history knowledge in this section of the site (Yaaay u guys! ) so i thought id tap u guys for some stories, anything from a quick quote to a lengthy story, light hearted, funny or chilling even purely informative whatever

Im struggling to think one myself right now but the thread will work better if i post an example first

U may know it already but here.....

Brian London was itching for a Sonny Liston fight and planned to confront Sonny in public about getting a fight. Liston was sitting at a flimsy little table signing autographs or answering questions - something like that, when London stormed up ready to give Sonny it with both barrels (verbally) and thumped his fist down for effected! The flimsy table flipped right over tho and Sonny just shot Brian the meanest coldest get outta here or im gonna ****in kill u glare London had ever seen! With that Brian left! Sonny hadnt even said a word

Sonny Liston Was walking by a Casino with his entourage. When all of a sudden Sonny Liston puts his hand up and stops with his entorage all bumping into him. He then starts walking over to one of the tables where Cassius Clay is standing. Sonny Liston walks right up to Clay looks him in the eyes and winds up and slaps him hard across the face. Clay wide eyed say's "w-w-what y-y-you do that for!" Sonny listen say's " Thats for being fresh!" Then Liston walks away and says to one of his entoruage " I just took his heart."

From a documentary I saw on Liston.

Never heard the story you posted about him, but his reaction sounded about right from what I have read about him. I think he did have a good side that came out around kids sometimes.

If someone was nice to him I think he really liked them. The minister at the jail he was in he was very fond of. Being tortured by his father and not being like other kids in school is what likely gave him a real mean streak.

This thread is a good idea I look forward to reading some stories about boxing from other posters.

On one occasion while he was champ, Liston and his publicity agent Ben Bentley were invited to the White House where they were introduced to vice president Lyndon Johnson in his office. As Johnson began to talk compulsively and show them around, the sullen Liston looked at Bentley and whispered in his ear, "Whaddya say we blow this bum off." Four monts later Johnson was president of the United States after John F Kennedy's assassination..

Here's another one with a twist of sadness. It's an account from Jack McKinney, a Philadelphia journalist who flew with Liston after the 1st Patterson fight.

After Sonny won the title in Chicago he sat on the plane rehearsing a mini speech he'd prepared for the reception at the airport. It went, "I know a lot of my own people were against me, i want to prove to them that i'm not going to embarrass them. I'll make them proud."

"So when he finally landed in Philadelphia, he took a step outside a stood there for a moment, just looking. I could see him looking both ways. Nothing. Nobody was there. I could almost see the air go out of him. The big broad shoulders infront of me just seemed to sag."
