  • Roy Jones: No excuses to duck Michael Nunn in 1997

After regaining his pound-for-pound status with a spectacular one-round KO off Montell Griffin, the WBC had ordered Jones to defend against former two-division champ Michael Nunn. (note the time frame in the 2nd Griffin fight and his next against Virgil Hill)

It was a best time for Jones to answer some of his critics, Nunn was once a top middleweight, Roy could cash into his name like Mike McCallum whom he fought a year ago, consider that Benn and Eubank were done by '97, and seriously, Steve Collins will never be competitive against RJJ.

If Jones could give title shots to the likes of Otis Grant and Rick Frazier, why can't Nunn, since obviously Roy doesnt wanna fight his amateur rival Frankie Liles (who beat Nunn) either.

Other than the Pac-May of that era, Roy Jones vs Dariusz M, Michael Nunn was the other opponent RJJ purposely ducked.

Very accurate. The WBC was almost eliminated from existence for letting Roy slide on that.

Is this serious? Roy took a tougher fight against a more credible opponent, Virgil Hill

No, It was a good move for Roy to fight Virgil Hill even without a belts at stake, what im referring was in between the Griffin and Hill fights, Jones didnt fought for about 7 months when Nunn was supposed to be next.

Roy ducked a decent mandatory contender while fighting every ****ty one he ever had. Like it or not, this is now boxing history.

Did he duck every decent contender or just some? I heard a while back it was some. Some used to say back in the day that he didn't fight a decent contender after James Toney until maybe Tarver. Is that true?

Michael Nunn would've been a good name on RJJ's resume.

LOL so Roy was supposed to fight 3x in 7 months? The irrational Roy Jones hate is ridiculous you people cry about not fighting Dariusz but than call Gonzalez a bum, cry about not fighting Collins but call Reggie Johnson a bum, and cry about not fighting Benn but call Malinga a bum.
