  • Was this 49-0 unbeaten fighter truly great?

    I think he was:

Because I think unbeaten streaks automatically make you an all time great.

    No.

Floyd Mayweather and Faruq Saleem are far from great, and they are unbeaten.

Nielsen was really 62-0. The loss to Dicky Ryan shouldn't count.

He had wins over prime Larry Holmes, Tim Witherspoon, Tony Tubbs, Orlin Norris, Mike Hunter, Jeremy Williams, Peter McNeeley, Ross Puritty, Dicky Ryan, Crawford Grimsley...

Well he did beat everybody they put in front of him.

That seems to be the only criterea to be an ATG in the minds of far too many around here.

Dicky Ryan at his best was a durable, clever counter puncher who could make anybody look bad with his style. I rank him #839 on my HW all-time great list and #9843 on my p4p list.

Mayweather is closer to great than Sloppy Joe.
