  • what happened to old school mma??

now that every fighter is a mixed martial artist, does anybody miss the old school fights that put wrestler against kickboxer, bjj vs judo??
To me it was great to find out which art was the most dominant at the time.

I really miss art vs art like in the old days or even the 2000GP anybody feel the same way??

Now it seems like all/most fighters are well rounded and their seems to be alot more lay n pray on the ground due to ground skill nullifying one another..

Just bought the 2000GP was watching it and thought i should bring it up..

Anyboyd here seen old ufcs or prides first gp??

My guess is cause GJJ dominated fight style back then, im sure u seen royce gracie submit any fighter bigger, smaller, faster, and with any style. Fighters nowadays learned that its better to be more rounded to win more fights after gjj beat everyone. Fighters can easily beat any fighters back in the old ufc, Matt Hughes sadly proved that to Royce Gracie on ufc 60.

alot of those guys used to specify in one training we still have gold medalist wrestlers, champion kickboxers, judo specialists.. etc.etc.. guess what im trying ot say why don't we see these guys fighting one another mma style.
(no sense of putting kickboxer vs mma fighhhter too much advantage.)

Bring in schilt or bonjasky to face kurt angle or yoshida or even gardner (thers many more options out their i think it would be pretty cool..)

To me it's more competitive now than it was back in the earlier days.

As for the visual aspect of it, MMA never really needed to evolve as it was extremely fun to watch (and imo opinion it was better than it is now), but from the point of view of the fighters participating, it needed to happen.

The increase in the cross-training (Kenny Shamrock was the first to do this after the first Gracie fight) resulted in the fighters becoming increasingly multi-dimensional (adding techniques to their arsenal that would expose opponents weakness while neutralizing their strengths) in their skills and subsequently a whole lot better to the fighters of the 90’s who **** themselves at the thought of going up against a BJJ practitioner.

Even though it's not style-vs-style, some guys are still VERY good at certain aspects. Karo Parisyen is still a judo guy, Hughes is a dominating wrestler, BJ Penn is BJJ first-type. They cross train, but still favor certain elements of the game.

In a way it is still old school mma, like 1bad65 said many of the fighters still have their main training and art to display, like Chuck Liddell, he is a Muay Thai guy first, wrestler second then a BJJ. I never knew this, but the guy is a purple belt in BJJ. Yet I havent really seen him use it accept to maybe get out of a bad situation on the ground. I think it would be cool to see them have both mma fighting using cross trained fighters, and then continue where the legacy started from picking one fighter against another fighter, both using only one method, yet going against different methods.

In my opinion, even the ancient arts like Judo and Muay Thai have actually evolved because of cross training in mma. You could actually put a BJJ guy up against a Muay Thai guy and the Muay Thai guy would actually have a really good chance of winning. Just because now everyone knows about all the different arts and how to beat them, using their own specific art.

dont get me wrong i'm all for the sprawl and stuff but having a kickboxer training just enough BJJ to avoid subs and neutralize the fight is not fun to watch.. I enjoyed when the bjj guy got to the ground he could finish quick or atleast produce movement..

What i'm trying to say is we still have champion wrestlers that dont fight and we have specific champions for each art that dont fight MMA..

Why not get them together for a few fights in an event make itJapanese MMA rules so ground work counts in scoring and lets see some specific style vs style fighting. Lets bring back the olympians to MMA i appreciate those fights and fighters they usually show the most heart and respect..

Even GJJ vs takada dojo produced some classic matchups.I wouldn't mind BTT taking on some takada dojo guys. that could be fun.. See matsui cornering alot of events it would be nice to see him come back for a fight.
