He is also a snake oil salesman who has people believing in his imaginary fighting credentials even to this day when we have proven through the evolution of MMA that these "martial arts" don't work in fights. I'd smash that 127lb manlet to bits in a real fight.

When Ali was coming along, martial artists trained seriously and had to be on top of their game... Ali was a great benefactor to the martial arts, he was a frequent friend of Richard Chun in NYC, Joon Rhe, and George Dillman, prior to Dillman deciding to go off the reservation with Chi balls.
Now lets talk about Lee: Lee could send a man, braced, holding a pad, of substantial strength and size into the wall with a side kick... the only comparable side kick was Joe Lewis, an Okinawan practicioner who routinely cracked ribs with his mule kick... Kicking alone increases range consdirably. Bill Wallace NEVER lost a match simply because his round kick was so fast no one could make it past the kick...
Lee had all kinds of weapons... His fingers, tactics... Lee was explosive and had incredible speed. Sp Ali, who spent an entire lifetime of spreading sunshine to abolish ignorance understood martial arts, and Lee, because he was a frequent practicioner and patron of the martial arts. In a street fight Lee would be a tough opponent. Watch what happens when a man gets kicked in the head... or when ribs are caved in.
This does not mean Lee was unbeatable... He could be grabbed, perhaps punched, but I implore all the naysayers to deal with someone who knows how to kick... It is like giving a boxer twice his reach. Personally I think Lee would have the hardest time against a Thai fighter and not a boxer. Thai guys could make it past Lee's kick... maybe... maybe. A grappler could also get to Lee BUT it would not be easy considering how fast Lee could move.
If you look at how Lee developed, when he initially fought, guys like Jackman (his big Oakland fight) he learned very quickly that sparring involves "waiting" instead of attacking in the gaps when someone is open. His timing was a BIG part of the development of his art. The timing he used was such that when a boxer went to set, a grappler moved to set up a takedown, or clinch, a Thai fighter launched a round kick, Lee would explode with a powerful technique that had crippling power. and Lee had supernatural speed... He trained speed at least as much as boxers do... So his speed was on a professional level.
People love to denigrate Lee but if you look at people in the martial arts community with some real currency they are almost, if not 100% united that Lee was a fantastic martial artist. Only people who have not seen him, or do not understand what his technical profiency was question his abilities. Like the person who started this thread: I would bet a good deal this person does not know about the reputation of many of Lees students like Insanto... No Dan Insanto does not have a professional record, he only trained many professionals, and only wrote the defining text on knife combat and distance. BUT HE NEVER FOUGHT IN A RING RIGHT!? I mean he probably did but because it was not his focus... The ignorance is amazing.
Lees students were generally fantastic fighters... try having a dojo in Oakland CA in the sixties, seventies and onward... Lee is respected by those who seem to have an educated opinion and experience fighting... That says a lot.
You know you see who knows what when they talk about who knew him anyway compared to the random experts who think he was just an actor . LolLast edited by juggernaut666; 11-13-2023, 01:50 PM.billeau2 likes this.
