How To Get To Heaven When You Die

What most people completely miss is that Jesus, himself, thought the end was nigh, 2000 years ago. Need proof?
Turn in your Bibles with me to the Book of Matthew, to Chapter 24 (read to yourselves up to Verse 34, to set the scene). Verse 34 (and I quote)"
"Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled."
Folks, a "generation" is widely accepted to be 20 years....certainly not 2000. It was only when the end didn't come, that the church leaders, starting with Paul of Tarsus, began a more vague "someday" pronouncement. Doomsday "Revelation-type" books were very popular during the beginning of the current era, especially in and around Jerusalem. They were "forseen" by a people who were under Rome's yoke and saw many "evil' things come to pass.
Judgement had to be coming...or so they hoped.
Of course, I don't blame anyone for believing it now......the previous countless "end of days" predictions which have taken place time and time again for decades and centuries when things got rough, not withstanding. I mean...we are still here...I think.
But the fact is there have always been "wars and rumors of wars"...and probably always will be until we wisen the **** up.
But hey, here's the plus side, doomsdayers. If you keep predicting the end of the world and waiting for it, eventually, you'll get it right.......whether by happenstance comet or self-fulfilling prophesy.
Just don't feel downtrodden when you don't see some guy riding down from the clouds on a white horse.
Ok...go ahead....tell me how wrong I am. I'll just wait right here for "the end".
Been waitin' a while just to use that one. LOL!!
Ok....fire away.

It was afterwards, as he went to he Mount of Olives that they asked the question, "When shall these things be?"
Jesus is responding directly to his disciples, telling them what "they" will see. He wasn't talking to you or me or even some future generation. That is the illusion of the power of words. He was very specifically responding to his closest followers.
Even if one wanted to give him the power of prediction and say, "Look, the Temple was thrown down"...that still happened in 70 A.D.; but the fact is Jesus wasn't the only one predicting "the end" back then. Jesus was a rabbi, a radical one, who you and I would never have even heard of if Saul of Tarsus hadn't decided to make his mark among the Gentiles.
Those men died long ago and the world's still here.

"A Generation" is referring to the one that sees those things happen.
"Shall not come to pass.." Means that there will be some in that generation that saw those things that have not yet died physically before all of those things be fulfilled.
My Dad was born in 1948. He will be 72 years old in October. Even if the Lord didn't come back for 40 years from now, there would likely still be someone left in his generation that was alive. That would make them 112 years old. There are people that old in the world.
So personally I believe that the Lord's return is going to be somewhere in this time area. It might be before than or a little after that. Maybe someone in that generation will live to be 117 years old, which is the current age of the oldest person on earth.
