Ukraine is the biggest country in Europe and possibly had the biggest active army so it was never going to be quick mate.....they have been digging in for over 8 years in the East of Ukraine and it was fortified to the hilt.

This was a complex operation and still is but as me and you said Russia is mopping up as they go along.....the only thing keeping Ukraine going is the USA and its allies with the funds and weapons they keep giving but even that will dry up when the real financial crash hits.
